Exclamation *Wipe Animation?*
Hey guys, I was wondering, is there an option in GIMP to make a .gif file and animating it so that images scroll?

Here is an example:

This is my first post, so I hope everything goes well! Big Grin

RE: *Wipe Animation?*
oooh! Thats an awesome effect! Its like those tickers at the airport or football scoreboards!

Taking a look at the gif in gimp I found out they animated the scroll effect by sections.

Its 69 frames in total!

I'm currently writing a example/tutorial using 3-5 frames of how you can do it.

Stay tuned, I should have it up in a few minutes!

RE: *Wipe Animation?*
K, done, *Please click the pictures for more detail(except for the gif)
Tutorial: how I would make a wipe scoreboard effect gif

If you want a similar effect with less frames:
To start Each layer you make will be the frame, after the below steps go to Filters > Animation > Optimize for gif
*You'll be making 3 to 4 composed layer/frames for this example
1. make your new layer & fill the background with a black (your text will be green or pastel/neon color) It should be a small banner size(cuts down on filesize too)
- duplicate the layer & fill it with a grey color
-with the grey layer selected, go to Filters > Distorts... > Newsprint
Settings:
()intensity
Near the bottom section of the newsprint window is "Angle:" set it to "-90.0", click ok
-I would name this layer "lights off"
2. Right-click the "lights-off" layer, click "add alpha channel.
- go to Colors... > Invert...
- Fuzzy select the grey color around the now white spots, push delete.
3. Select > none...
Your frame should look like this now

4. Change dot layer mode to "Grain merge"
Now it will look like this.

- right-click the layer & click "merge visible layers" or "merge down".
*do not flatten when done with animation, refer to my intro step "Filter > Animation..."
(this frame will be your base mask for the scrolling effect)
"Look up loading bar tutorials for an idea of how this animation works/masking"

5. (Text) with the text tool, Drag a box the same size as the banner, align center.
pick a light/pastel color & type. If you want the doted effect, you'll need to keep your text for each frame in the same location/center position. Type whatever you want, for this example, keep it short.
- Then use the move tool (Move ) & try to line up the text as best as possilbe with the dots behind it. (change text size or spacing if needed)

6. Set your text layer mode to "Color"
Now for the tricky part, you'll want to keep your text layer & "lights off" layer intact, so for now work on copy/duplicates of them. You can delete them later if it looks weird.

- Copy the hello layer for frame one, you should have 2 light layers, on on the top & bottom. (you'll merge these 3 layers after each frame is made)

*NOTE: it maybe quicker to merge as visible, but make sure you click the eye off of your two bottom layers to preserve them until done.

7. Now just delete the top layer covering the HELLO, section by section(each frame 1 section), here's what the first & second frame will look like, uncomposed.

- You can even adjust the opacity of the top layer so you can better control howmuch you delete. Just make sure you turn the opacity back to 100 when done.
- Repeat this process for the remainder frames then "Filter > Animation > Plaback...
(to preview)
Filter > Animation > Optimize for gif...
8. Then save as .gif option: save as animation
(you will want to play around with delay between frames if its too fast.)

This is what all the frames look like, my last frame is uncomposed(compose when done.) Delete the two bottom layers(originals) before you save.

Saving as gif:
[] As Animation
[]Loop forever
Delay : 200 milliseconds
[]Use delay entered above for all frames
Click ok

- To preview your gif in windozeVizta , 7 or 8, right-click the file & open with... any web browser.

RE: *Wipe Animation?*
I couldn't resist trying to make a faithful render of the original GIF using AnimStack

Close enough Sleepy

download XCF

(Filters - Animation - Process Animstack Tags, Filters - Animation - Optimize for GIF, export to gif)

Basically I use invisible moving wipe layers as masks for each sign. They start to the left of the image and move by 25 pixels right each turn. Image is 525px wide, so it takes 21 frames to reveal each sign.

I also have a video tutorial on a similar effect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gat4af49Lc (relevant part starts at 5:25)

RE: *Wipe Animation?*
I used frames from the original GIF. If I had to make this from scratch, I'd probably draw a pixel art version of the sign, then scale up with no interpolation and then apply a dots pattern.
