Win 8 and gimp Compatibility
Hi All,

Totally new to GIMP and you could say to PC speak.
My glitch with Gimp 2.8.6 is, unable to start it from
Desktop Icon, or (Start..Programs..Gimp 2).
Gimp starts to the point, (Wind exe, entry point not found).
Also receive (libgimpui-2.0-0 dll) not located.

Start Gimp 2.8.6 with Compatibility tool, 2.8.6 will start OK
with compatibility tool using (service pack 3), but only
the once even though compatibility saved settings.
Start Gimp from desktop Icon again, No luck stops
at, entry point not found.

Goto Win 8 (File Explorer.. Program Files..Gimp 2..bin..gimp-2.8) and
double click that Icon and Gimp 2.8.6 stars 100% OK.

My second Glitch is, after copy/Paste pspi (gimp-pspi=107 win32) into
Gimp Plug-ins I can't seam to find the rite path.
I click on (Filters) then down to (Photoshop plug-in settings) then
type in (C:\Program files\Gimp 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins) then
receive, (the new search path will be used next time GIMP is started) , but
no joy, no plugins.

One other thing, All the (LIBglib-2.0-0 dll..gimpui..intl-8..gobjct-2.0) are not in
your computer errors, are all in Gimps bin section.
IN (Computer>Local Disk ©>Program files>GIMP 2 >bin).

BF.

RE: Win 8 and gimp Compatibility
well to kick off your path to a solution. They have a similar problem of shortcuts on the registry, the people there think its a duplicate file (lib...)
http://registry.gimp.org/node/24432

However, I don't recommend doing what the last 1 or 2 posters said (intl_...) unless you really know what your doing.

If clicking on the original icon opens gimp ok, then the problem merely lies with your shortcut. Maybe the pointing to the wrong path(got messed up some how).

I would check the properties of your shortcut to see if it matches the original icon's location

Is this a standard installation from the Win-Gimp download page? Have you checked the dumb M$ user account control settings etc..etc.
--------------------
First of all, caveat, I know nothing at all about Win8, so this is in a win7 64bit VM.

As a best guess, it is a paths problem. Gimp can't find files unless you start in the folder structure, is an indication.

As a long shot, add the Gimp folder paths to the paths environmental variable.
How do you do this in Win8? I found this for java, but it does tell how to enter the Win8 system.
http://java-buddy.blogspot.co.uk/2012/01...ows-8.html
The first half of the page indicates the steps need to get to editing the PATH variable.

A second way would be to make a batch file to temporarily add the path, & then start GIMP. Something like
Code:
@echo off
SET PATH=%PATH%;C:\Program Files\GIMP 2;C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\32;C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\32\bin;C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin
start gimp-2.8.exe

I think this should cover it and might just work. The batch files goes in your main C:\Program files\Gimp 2\ folder.

pspi
First thing to note is that this was made for Gimp 2.2 and when it does work, generally will only work with simple-ish .8bf PS plugins. Even then some of these will require additional (old) dll's that are no longer included in Windoze.

Again this is Win7.
Pop the pspi.exe in your local .\gimp-2.8\plugins folder. If already in the global folder maybe leave it there. Where does the settings dialog point to?
C:\Program files\Gimp 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins is not a good place and does that location contain your 8bf plugin(s). You should not have to type anything in, the dialog will let you search.
I tend to make an additional folder in .\gimp-2.8 for these plugins, just to keep everything neat and tidy.
A couple of screenshots of this in action.

-------------------
If it is any help attached a zip with the batch file and the lightningmaker plugin which I know will work, if pspi is working.

Attached File(s)
.zip  batchfile.zip (Size: 73.12 KB / Downloads: 41)

RE: Win 8 and gimp Compatibility
Hi All,

@rich2005, Uploaded your batch, now have Desktop Icon (Start Gimp) that
Starts Up Gimp every time.
Have Uploaded (A Lighting Maker) to Gimp, working OK.

pspi is in Gimp\plug-ins, not sure now where the dialog box pointed too.
Have tried that many locations.

I click Filters down to (Photoshop plug-ins setting) click to bring up
Photoshop plug-in settings box, the last location I tried is (C:\Users\Username\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\).

rich2005, I have installed plugin (G'MIC) and it works OK.
Thing is, I read you need these two XZM file to run (gmic gimp win32), files
are, (gimp gmic-1.5.5 xzm) and (fftw 3.3.2.xml). Open with (filesout) ?.
If I need to use them could you tell me where and how t0 Install.

RE: Win 8 and gimp Compatibility
Again the "I do not use Win 8" caveat, I normally use linux but I do have a Win7 64 bit Virtual Machine which should be similar in file structure to Win 8.

To save a lot of writing a video that might help. http://youtu.be/N8hg0qnONQo 5 1/2 mins.

pspi.
Just goes through the setup, I think it is roughly what you already have. The main thing is the PS 8bf plugins go in the location you specify in the pspi setup.

Gmic.
Reading between the lines, you might have downloaded the wrong version, Maybe a gzip of some sort.
Does not matter, I tried all ways and the Gmic 64 bit plugin refused to work. Plenty of error messages.
What does work is the Gmic 32 bit package. Put this in the windows Program Files(x86) section.
All demonstrated in the video.

Thats it for day, totally sick of windows 64 bit installations. Let us know how you get on.
