Why use layer masks?
I've been questioning this for years and was looking for an answer and found you all. Why od people use layer masks?

I read tutorials all the time. They say to apply the mask, then erase the mask around where you want to keep, then delete the picture thats under the mask.

Why not just use an eraser and erase what you don't want?

I've been doing this sort of stuff for fun for about 15 years now and I have never figured this out. I'm not very good at what I do but I've learned the basics at least...

This is the most recent tutorial I've seen that says to do it

As long as I'm at it, whats an alpha channel? Thats one thing I've never figured out.

Thanks for any links or help I can get.

RE: Why use layer masks?
Rosie Hardy is the Queen of the eraser, it is her favourite tool. She does things with the eraser that i've never seen before and i'm not a GIMP-greenhorn Wink
But, she's a pro and time is money. No time for big fiddeling on every picture.
I, by myself, love layer masks. So i have no lost of informations for later changes, if need it.
