RE: Where to download GIMP?
Downloaded what from where (actual URL used)?

Installed how? On what operating system?

"Not running"? How did you try to "run"? Clicked on something? What? Got any popups or error messages?

Sorry for the questions, but otherwise we would have to write a 3-pounds book to over all possible cases Smile

Hi Einherjar,

First of all nice to meet you. I'm a complete beginner for GIMP software. Currently I'm working on a banner for my personal blog. Do you have any suggestion link for tutorial so that I can learn to use GIMP from the start. I'm trying to use adobe photoshop before but not suitable to me since it's very tricky to use. Friend of mine says GIMP is an easy tool to make any kind of banner. Unfortunately, he also don't use it. So I hope you can provide me a tutorial link here.

Regards,
Bryan

RE: Where to download GIMP?
Gimp & Photoshop are about as tricky to use. They are actually quite easy, once you understand the concepts used in bitmap image editing (the most important one being layers and transparency).

For tutorials you can start here: http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/

Further questions about Gimp or image editing concepts are better asked in the General or Beginners sections.

RE: Where to download GIMP?
I have downloaded and used GIMP previously, but my computer completely crashed last week and I have had to buy a new one. I use GIMP nearly every day so I cmae here to download it, and no matter what link, or what site I try to download the program from, it doesnt works. I get this message:

Oops! Google Chrome could not connect to 10.9.80.177:15871

I thought maybe it was just Chrome since it is incompatible with some programs. So I tried Firefox and got this message:
Code:
The connection has timed out

The server at 10.9.80.177 is taking too long to respond.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.

If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.

If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

I checked my firewall and it is fine.
In IE, I got this one:

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Does anyone know what is going on??? I have some images that desperately need to be done and I cant get GIMP!!! I would very much appreciate any advice or help! Thanks in advance!

RE: Where to download GIMP?
An address starting with "10." is a private address, typically on a company intranet. Port 15871 seems to be used by some "web threat protection" software (websense). I get this kind of error when I have a proxy setting leftover and I'm connecting from a network without a proxy (or with a proxy at a different address). Unless your ISP is playing tricks.... buy if you can connect to Gimpforums, you should be able to connect to gimp-win...

RE: Where to download GIMP?
is it possible to get a portable version of GIMP that doesn't need installation as such, like double-click and go types. coz in my office such installation is restricted and even if i were to paste brushes it requires admin rights.

it would be great if there is such a version of this great software.

http://www.partha.com

or

portableapps.com

You never need admin rights to add brushes... Windows users usually get the wrong recommendation to add brushes/patterns in the Gimp installation tree (which requires admin priviledges) but that's not where they should go... they should be installed in the user's Gimp profile on which the user has the necessary access rights

RE: Where to download GIMP?
I'm pretty sure there are Gimp books with a DVD.

But video tutorials aren't very useful, they show you things happening on an image which has been selected to be easy to work on, they very rarely explain why things are done that way, and, above all, how you can do things differently if the image at hand isn't perfect.

Prefer the print material...

RE: Where to download GIMP?
CNET download or Sourceforge is a great way and safe place to start!

RE: Where to download GIMP?
Following, the Sourceforge policy on sponsored links, dubious installers etc. Gimp installers can be found here http://www.gimp.org/ - same as before but no longer redirects to Sourceforge.
and a more direct route for MS Windows users
ftp://ftp.gimp.org/pub/gimp/v2.8/windows/

Just my opinion, personally, I would not touch CNET with a bargepole.
