When I opening an Photoshop file in Gimp...
Hello I'm new to Gimp.
I just open a Photoshop file in Gimp and it rasterize the text and remove layer styles.
Is there a way to fix this and does gimp have a layer styles feature?
Also how do you lock a layer? every time try to move a layer with text or an image the background/other layers, it keeps moving.

Hi hibi,

there is something for Gimp that does similar things as PS layerstyles but it works differently.
Its called layerfx and its either a script or a python plug-in.

You can find it here:
http://registry.gimp.org/node/186

So no, you cant open a PS file in Gimp and edit the layerstyle, thats why you end up with the rasterised text-layer.

As far as i know there is no layer-lock, but tbh i never felt i needed one.

Hope that helps.

Hi hibi, welcome to the forum.

You can 'pixel' lock the layer to prevent editing, but you cannot stop the layer from being moved. (You can always select a different tool to prevent accidental moving)

When selecting the 'Move' tool, you have the option to choose 'the active layer' or 'pick a layer or guide'. You can also use the arrow keys to move the layer so it is not always necessary to use the mouse in the process.

okay, this is a complex matter

the scm layerfx has no preview, that means you have to hit okay and then undo until you found the values you wanna use
this can be tedious

the scm file goes into your C -> user -> gimp.2.8 -> scripts folder

the python version has a preview
its the one i use and recommend

but beware, there are a few bugs

if you uncheck preview and then cancel, layerfx will eat your history journal (no joke)
so always hit okay and undo if necessary !

also the latest layerfx.py uses layergroups
unfortunatley these layergroups dont work with layer-modes, meaning you have to drag the layers out of the folder
thats why i use the older version (called layerfx) !

the layerfx.py goes into your C -> user -> gimp.2.8 -> plug-ins folder

i have written a tutorial on alpha curves, that will enhance your texteffects done with layerfx, here:
