Using OpenCL in Gimp
Hi,

I saw how OpenCL can improve Gimp processing times in this article:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/photoshop-...61-10.html

I would like the PC I'm going to have built soon to be able to use OpenCL, to reduce the time it takes to run these Gimp filters.

Do I need to get any particular hardware to allow OpenCL to work in Gimp?
eg. particular brand or type of GPU

Is OpenCL always enabled in the current gimp 2.8 release?
Or is there something I have to do to allow it to work?
eg. this post from 2012 http://gimpforums.com/thread-how-do-i-en...pu-in-gegl

Is there any software I would need apart from Gimp?

What should I look for in a GPU? Would the most basic, cheapest Graphics card make a nice improvement or is a high spec GPU needed?

Can OpenCL in Gimp use more than one GPU? If not, is a possibility for the future?

Many thanks for help answering any of these questions.

PS.
Spec for PC so far:
i7 4790k
32gb RAM
ASRock Z97 Extreme4 motherboard
Windows 8.1

RE: Using OpenCL in Gimp
Thank you for all the helpful information.

Was this fast filter processing done with a particular special version of Gimp, rather than the general release?
The performance increases shown in the graphs on that page are impressive.

Is it possible to use that version?

Many thanks

RE: Using OpenCL in Gimp
Thank you, I tried some of the "GEGL tools" on a laptop that says it has seperate GPU, I saw no improvement in any of the filters compared to the regular version of the filters. The manufacturer says the GPU series is OpenCL compatible.
What am I missing?
Are there other hardware considerations? Is the use of OpenCL in Gimp for GEGL tool filters automatic, or do I have to tell Gimp to use it?
I'd like my new PC to be able to use OpenCL in Gimp and want to be sure in choosing the right parts.
Thanks
