Using Gimp In Linux
Ok I have just started playing with ubuntu...I have the program loaded but have found that I have some extra features such as FX-Functions...

I am trying to use the layer effects on it but it only works in the top left had corner of the image and if you try and move the layer the effect stays there and does not go with the layer you have just added a glow to...

Not sure if this makes any sense whatsoever but was wondering is it supposed to do this or am I doing something wrong?

RE: Using Gimp In Linux
The effect is on another layer, so if you want to move the orginal layer you have to link the effects layer (link check box near the eye/visibility check box in the Layers dialog.

Oh right....thank you...will give it a try....one quick question though why does it only appear in the top left hand corner and not behind the layer you are trying to use?

Works for me for all FX I used ... Are you testing a specific effect? If so, which?

RE: Using Gimp In Linux
I am doing outer glow and just trying to do it on a new layer and that layer is the 'live' layer but if I don't move it to the left hand top corner it either doesn't do it or it just does the bit that over lays...so damn weird...

No difference between Windows and Ubuntu as far as I can tell... (I run (K)Ubuntu now but used to be on Windows).

PS: Screenshots could be OK, too.

ok discovered how to do it! got them the fx function scripts loaded onto windows and guess what it is doing the same....would need to do a vid as it happens to quickly for screen shots....

This is what I do I open up an image as a background then open another image as a layer then apply the outer glow effect...is this correct?

Yes, that should work... but.... the outer glow effect is limited by the "canvas" so if your layer is stuck against a side (or worse, a corner) then that part of the glow that falls outside the canvas will never show up. You have to move the layer off the sides for a complete glow.

I had a play last night and realised that the background has to be the same size as the image you want to add a glow to then you can add it to the backgroud image that you want to use for your wallpaper.....I will learn eventually....thanks for all you help! Big Grin
