Used GIMP all the time before major upgrade. Now I'm lost
I taught myself GIMP and have done a lot of work with it in the past. At some point I updated to 2.8 and I just don't get it.

I can't do ANTHING anymore and I have tried and tried.

Here is my current problem:

1) I primarily use the toolbox that has the tools on it. Pen, blur, etc. If I choose a pen I used to be able to go into the lower area of this same toolbox and change the size of the pen and other things. Now the lower area just says "you can drag dockable toolbars here". Well I went up into the file menu and found the dockable toolbars and clicked on the tool properties to create a window with the stuff I need. BUT dropping this onto the main toolbox does nothing.

I mean it says right there "you can drag and drop dockable toolbars here" but it doesn't work!

What I want is to get back to the simple interface that worked so well before. Tools in the upper area and properties in the lower. Why is this so difficult? Why would they separate tools from properties any way?

On the right there is a place for some dialogues. Layers, Channels, Paths, maybe some others too.
When you go to file menu>dockable toolbars>tool options a new tab will be created next to Layers, Channels, Paths, etc. Select the tool options tab. Now drag it to the spot you want below the tools.

Could you flesh this out a bit?

"On the right..." - What are you telling me here?

"When you go to" - A new tab will be created when I go to the menu? Where is this new tab? What is the purpose?

"Select the tool options tab..." - Here I think you are describing what I already tried that didn't work. I found the tool options in the menu and clicked on it to create a new bar and tried to drop that bar into the area I want it to be. It did nothing,

I appreciate the attempt at help, I just don't follow what you are saying.

I already have the tool bar with my paint brush etc. I just want the tool options to be right below like they used to be. I'm probably overlooking something that the developers consider really simple.

Thank You, the Gif animation really made it clear.

How in the world do most users figure that out? Is there a purpose for making it so weird? I've been dragging windows for years and you grab them by the big bar at the top.

The text says "you can drag and drop redockable windows here" it doesn't say anything about grabbing them in some unconventional manner. Would there have been some problem if they had just let you drag the window in the way that you are used to and drop it on the toolbar?

(I'm just trying to understand GIMP's reasoning on all this. I'm not directing my annoyance at you. One day I could use GIMP and the next day I can't. I really think you can improve a program without making it so disorienting for people. When I open the new GIMP things should be where I expect them to be along with some exciting new options, What if someone upgraded your car overnight for you and the upgraded in such a way that you couldn't drive it? You have to go on line and try to find the right forum and then find the right words to even describe the problem you are having)

Thanks for your patience with me. There is no way I would have reasoned out that you have to drag the window by a different area than the title bar to drop it. That's just so arbitrary. I mean I've been told to drag and drop windows for a long time and I know exactly what that means.

I really appreciate the help. I would have saved myself a lot of frustration if I had signed up on this forum right away. I did look at all sorts of help files, tutorials etc. I just didn't find the right place.

You're not alone prest0 LOL, I had a similar problem when I upgraded to win8 with gimp 2.8, for some reason I accidentally dragged the toolbox options section out of the Toolbox window, then when I tried to drag it back into that space like you did, it wouldn't locked in. Did a little research, and restarted gimp & I was able to re-dock it, pesky docks xD
