UI issues
Hey!

I've been working with some pixel art recently and when you work with pixel art, you want to have 2 views of your sprite (zoomed in view, where you edit and a 100% view, where you check how your pixels actually look).

For some time I have been using the "Navigation Window" dockable dialog as a 100% view, but I found out that it's not good at all. It's way too messy. Because some pixels in Navigation Window look bigger than the others. You can have 2 lines same size next to each other, but for some reason one always looks twice the size of the other one. The Navigation Window is "lying" to me! Undependable.
Long story short: Navigation Window wasn't created for that purpose and it sucks at it.

So now I always open up a New View of my art, hide things like rulers and menubar to make that window take up as little space as possible, then I drag it on the corner of my screen and squeeze the rest of the toolboxes somewhere else. And it works fine.
But the problem is that I have to do this setup every time I launch GIMP! I waste 5 minutes just for setting up my UI every time I start working.

What I wanted to ask: Is there any way I can make that New View of my art stay on top of the main window?

I've tried going to Single Window mode, but there you can't even see the other view. It shrinks into a tab on the top of the screen and you have to switch between them. What the hell? Why does GIMP in Single Window mode treat additional views like diffirent images?

Why can't it be like in Photoshop? It works in Single Window, but you can have more windows open on top of the main one.

I know that GIMP is free and I'm not supposed to complain. And I don't want to buy Photoshop just for that additional view.
I don't blame GIMP for not having all the features and tools that Photoshop packs. In fact, GIMP has more features and tools than I would ever need. But there are these tiny-stupid mistakes that just make GIMP a bit less convenient. Like additional views not staying on top of the main window.
I just need to fix this issue.

I've even tried a couple of applications that make windows of your choice always stay on top, even if you click on another window. But they don't work on individual GIMP windows. All the GIMP windows are being treated as one, so I can't make only one GIMP window always stay on top.

Please tell me that there is a way to make certain views stay on top of the main window.
Like toolboxes, palettes and other dockable dialogs. Something like dockable views would be perfect. If I could have a certain view always on top like the palette (that I'm often using), it would be great.
Is there perhaps an extension or something?

(I guess you could afford PS if you could afford two or more monitors eh?)

Yea, thats one of the options. Still it would be nicer if I could just have that little window stay on top since I wouldn't have to keep turning my head left and right all the time.
I was looking for more GIMP-specific solutions.

Remember Gimp was originally developed in Unix and is still developed in Linux where multiple windows are usual. Then throw in multiple virtual desktops and separate 'activities' - where desktops for graphics, audio, games are available. M$ is just catching up with virtual desktops.

The current Gimp 2.8.x Single Window Mode largely due to Win users not used to multi-window applications. IMHO Gimp suits the majority of users.

As a devotee of pixel graphics you I fear are in a minority.

Back to your problem. Do you use Windows? In linux I can pin a window in any number of ways. OSX - I know nothing about.

Assuming Win.
When I used Gimp 2.6 I always consolidated all the dialogs into a single window + any image(s)
Then there are (free) utilities to pin a window on top, which might work for you. edit: I see you have tried some of these, bound to be one that works.

Would look like this, a bit cramped because it is in a Win7 VM & Gimp 2.8.10

Agreed, all this still takes time to set up, although is a couple of minutes too much time?
It might be possible to write a script to open an image + a new view in one go.
Why not ask (short request) in the plug-ins section and you might get a yes possible/not possible.

You're probably talking about that thing in the bottom left corner.
That guy is using the Navigation Window. I've been using that for a while, and while it seems to work for bigger images, it is undependable to use for pixel art. I really don't know why, but some pixels are displayed larger than the others and it makes pixel art look like a complete mess. It's kinda hard to explain so just take a look at this screenshot:

This is exactly what I've been looking for.
   

DeskPins solves the problem. It's a lot faster than arranging windows across my screen every time I launch GIMP. Now I just open up my file, go fullscreen, get a New View and pin it. It stays wherever I put it, so I don't have to look across the screen all the time.
This is what I meant when I said "Like in Photoshop".

I've tried a few of these little apps for making windows stay on top, but they were all treating GIMP windows as one single window.

DeskPins is a lot better.

GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program) is mostly *nix although because of M$, users are mostly Windows.

Linux loves recursive acronyms
LAME (LAME Ain't an MP3 Encoder)

So maybe Gimp should be renamed

I do not know if you saw the entire video.
But it was not on the Navigation Window to which I referred.

But watch the video from 0:41 seconds before.

He used New View - View

And you can use different zooms in each view, and position them where you want.

Ok, DeskPins solves the problem, all nice so.

Yea, I know about New View, I mentioned it in my first post up there. The only problem was that it wouldn't stay on top of other windows.
It does now, with DeskPins.
