Trouble with High Pass Masking
Hi all,

I'm trying to use a high pass to mask out the hair in an image (roughly what this tutorial shows, except I have an actual high-pass script installed and I don't want to select any face or body).

The problem I'm having is that being able to mask out the hair depends on having all of the edges / flyaways be a similar luminosity relative to the background they're on (ie either darker or lighter than the background), but the flyaways off to the left are significantly brighter than their background, but the hair surrounding the face and on the bright window is significantly darker than it's background. (Picture below.) I don't know how to use this to make a mask for extracting the hair. Does anyone with more experience have any advice for me? Is this even the right method to use to mask out the hair on an image like this?

(I hope I explained myself well. If not, check the tutorial or feel free to ask for clarification. Thanks in advance for any help!)

As you can see, the hair surrounding the face is darker than the face, while the hair off to the left is much lighter than the background.

RE: Trouble with High Pass Masking
Since your background isn't one flat color like the example tutorial you linked. Try making a threshold selection mask for complex backgrounds using the find edges filter as seen here:

It will take a little practice. Its similar to the highpass technique. Happy Gimping ^_^
