Transparent Erasing
I've looked at guides and I know what I'm trying to do, but can't seem to do it no matter how I try and do it.

I know I can create transparency in images with an alpha layer or alpha channel in the main layer of a png/gif, but for some reason I can't get a particular jpg to erase to transparency with either of these tools. Obviously I have to save it as a png/gif to save the transparency, but I can't even get it to edit in the transparency without just selecting and deleting: I want to use the eraser brush. Any feedback appreciated. I've also tried just saving the jpg as a png and editing from there, still doesn't work. I've confirmed I'm selecting the proper layer.
