Transparency
Hello, Im having a wierd problem with transparency, and Im hoping you guys can help... Im making some images for a project and i noticed something wierd was happening, the edited images were i painted colors on transparency and then later used "delete" key to delete the color and make it fully transparent again, arent becoming "fully transparent"! Even thow it looks like they are transparent in Gimp, if i use the color picker it shows a "gray" when selecting the transparent area when it should be "black" to show the full transparency... If i use a newly freshed transaprent image and edit only the areas i need, the intended transparent area is ok.

This image shows the color from the area i need painted, and color picker shows black.

This image shows what the area inside red is being picked, show be black, but it is gray...

Am I missing anything?
I have an Alpha Channel, and in other editing i usually do, i use the delete key to put specified area to fully transparent again.
I also know i can use masks to make area transparent, but i think that i dont need them in this kind of situation?...
Isnt the delete key when used with a selection area supposed to make area fully transparent?

Thanks for any help.

RE: Transparency
Hi zead,

I agree with ofnuts' comments.

When using the Color Picker tool, in the tool options, set the 'Use Info Window' checkbox.
In the example images I posted below, notice I have 2 layers. Both were identical, but the one I named 'deleted' is exactly that, the grey area being deleted using (Edit->Clear) or the Delete key as you described.

Notice that the RGB values remain the same, but the Alpha value is the only thing changed by the delete action.

Hello, thanks for the replies! Smile I understand what the alfa channel is, the images Im making are to be used in a game. Also understand the black and white in the mask concept.

The color picker information is saying it is full transparent. "0"
I also tought that "delete" key would nullify the color, putting it all to zero, i was mistaken. When colors are nullyfied teh picker retreives black, that is waht i was refering to as "fully trasnparent".
Now my i think my problem isnt really in the colors but in the export mode. I have been using a plugin to export ".dds", I will have to check the export options properly since now the problem seams to be coming from there :/... Wierd part is that the export is being done in a way that the transparent colros arent fully transparent (or not recognised has that) when they have color information diferent then 0 in RGB.

Thanks guys.

RE: Transparency
Hello again, I found the problem, DDS treats the black and white with alpha channel abit like the mask layer but in its own way.
When the images are to rendered in 2D, White is fully "white" (whatever color is in there) , and black is fully transparent when alpha is used.
Teating the image has "NonPremultiplied" solves the issue, or use black in all alphas.
