Toolbox always on top
(Windows XP)
The toolbox and the layers-brush box are always appearing on my system when GIMP is running.
I can minimize all my GIMP windows, but those boxes stay up.
I can "show desktop" and they will disappear but then the moment any other window is up, they appear once again.

This gets very annoying when I leave GIMP open while working on other things.
Is there any way I can set them to minimize when all the other GIMP windows are minimized?

Try Edit/Preferences -> Window management. I think what you want is "Utility window".

Window management only gives me these options:

Window Manager Hints:
-Hint for the toolbox
-Hint for the other docks
Focus:
-Activate the focused image
Window Positions
-Save window positions on exit

Yes, and the "hints" have a "Normal window/Utility window/Keep above" choices.

However, this didn't answer Marscaleb's question. If I correctly understand his question as actually stated, maybe his thread title should have been "Toolbox always on desktop". The preferences option noted by Mr. Ofnuts allows other windows to stack on top of the Toolbox and Layers/Channels/etc. windows, but it doesn't appear to cause those windows to minimize to the taskbar-- only the main GIMP window, the image window, minimizes. The question is, is there any way to force all 3 windows (including the docks) to minimize when you minimize the main image window?

Possibly not but there is a workaround.
Since I use linux I am well used to having several workspaces where different applications are running. Don't see how you can work efficiently without them. Windows machines drive me crazy with minimising, etc.

There is a 'workspace creator' for windows, you can find it at sourceforge also a portable version here
http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/v...n_portable

Once it is running and set up, just a matter of swapping to a new workspace to hide Gimp.

Of course not... because there is no "main window". If you are editing several images, you will often want to minimize one image without minimizing other dialogs. 2.7/2.8 has a single-window mode which may be a better answer.

RE: Toolbox always on top
Yeah, I just changed those window options and I am not happy with any of them.
The other options put the toolbox as its own window with a taskbar button and everything, sucking up room on my taskbar. The only other option did the same thing but had the box so over everything that it even covered the taskbar, which was even more annoying.

The feature I want is to be able to have the toolbox and other such boxes disappear if all other GIMP windows are minimized.
It bothered me when I first started using GIMP that the program wanted to give each image its own window and place on the taskbar, unlike the programs I was used to using, but over time I have grown accustomed to it. Now looking at it today I think it is a better system to have the program use one single window and all the images and such are simply sub-windows that are part of the program. I almost never use GIMP by itself but I usually have other programs I'm jumping back and forth with at the same time.
