[Tip] Why to make apng and not gif
Animated Portable Networks Graphics (APNG)

The two problems with GIF images are palettes are limited to 256 colors and lack alpha transparency. Resulting in grainy looking images which do not smoothly blend into their background.

Popular browsers like FireFox, Opera, and Chrome now support APNG formats.

That is the good news, now for the "bad news". So far I have not found any proven method to create one using the GIMP. Internet Explorer among other browsers, cannot see the animation and will display the first frame as a still image. Editors to create APNG are also limited... no one seem to want to make them???

APNG Editors
If you use FF as a browser, you are in luck. Not only does the browser support APNG by default, it also has a plugin available to create them from any image format.

Others can use cphktool APNG Anime Maker or Japng - "Java APNG".

If you can see Sonic waiting for you to make an APNG then your browser supports APNG.
