Text size issues
Hi,
Just downloaded Gimp. I had some trouble with the text size and font. Do you need to download fonts because it always goes back to Sans?
Thanks

RE: Text size issues
Assuming you are using one of the M$ Windows.

Gimp will pick up all the installed windows fonts. Not much you can do about that.

If you want extra fonts just for Gimp the place to put them is in your Gimp 'profile' In windows that is the folder C:\User\'your-name'\.gimp-2.8
Fonts go in the folder aptly named ...gimp-2.8\fonts

Just my opinion but I set up a new Gimp installation as:

Go into single window mode and set the sizes, docks etc the way you want them

For the fonts go to the Text tool. select the font and size you want to start with.
Why Gimp defaults to the airbrush tool I do not know so now select the paint brush tool and I would go for the smallest brush.

Once you have everything the way you want go to
Edit -> Preferences -> tool options. Untick save options on exit if it is ticked (unlikely with a new install) and click on "Save Tool Options Now"

Same place but a bit further down the preference list, open "Window Management" untick "save window positions on exit" and click on "Save Window Positions Now".

If you close down Gimp and restart it will go to those settings. Want to change anything then go back and repeat the process.

RE: Text size issues
I just downloaded Gimp 2.8.8 and I'm running it on Mac OS X 10.9.2. I can actually see all the different fonts, but when I select one and try to type, it reverts back to Sans. Same thing happens when I try to change the font size. The largest size font I can type is 18pt.

RE: Text size issues
So I just download 2.8.10 and I'm still having the same issue. When I make a text box and try to type the only font and size that types is Sans 18pt. Perhaps its some setting that I have on my computer? Or maybe I'm just doing something wrong?

RE: Text size issues
It could be a mistaken idea of how the text tool works.

The on canvas dialog will change the font characteristics for selected text. It reverts to the default once the cursor is at the end of the text. (not quite true but close enough to start with)

As Ofnuts post you need to bring up the text tool settings under the tool options which governs the 'global' properties.

It still could well be a OSX thing but this little video demonstrates the Gimp 2.8 text tool as it should work.

RE: Text size issues
Sorry for the delayed response, but I figured it out. I'm not too sure what the issue was, but its working now. Thanks for the help.
