Text along path, but with straight letters.
So how can I accomplish something like the 'Reckless' text in the picture of the hat below using Gimp?

I already know how to 'text along path' but then the letters are skewed.

Maybe not as easy as you might hope.

Although the characters are upright, the bottom and top of the text follow a path.

One possibility is Saul Goode's warp text script

http://registry.gimp.org/node/24568

The spacing of the text is not even, so using the Gimp 2.8 text tool try and space the individual characters out (or in). Finding a suitable font is something else again.

Then make a 4 node path in the top left to bottom right left. Run the script which installs to filters -> distorts. Go for a beer, come back when it has finished.

That just gives you another path which you have to colour in, Your image has a sort of bevel which might be a problem.

An old-ish video, someone who wanted sloping text but it does show the warp text script in action.

If you are looking to match fonts on that image, you can browse dafont.com but it looks like a Fancy Old School font. Try Varsity or Friday Night Lights.

RE: Text along path, but with straight letters.
Here is a neat little trick, although there is minimal ailising on the edges but depending on the size of your text/font it might not be an issue. Maybe it can work

-Type your text, push enter, then
Layer > Layer to Image size (to extend boundary to image/canvas size)

-Using the cage transform tool, make 6 points to start off
click on the first point to finish your cage(it should look like a rectangle with 3 points on the top and the bottom.
Or
After making the shape, Click under Tool Options "Deform the cage to deform the image"

-Then drag a point to deform the text, I'd start by pulling the top middle one up and the bottom middle one down.

When your done push enter to confirm transformation. Note: You might also see a little of the original text on the bottom or top, you can just erase that part.

*Follow up with: Filter > Enhance > Unsharp mask, if you need it to be crisper.
My settings for font "Sans" Bold at size 40:
-Radius 5.0 -Amount .50 -Threshold: 0
(My final result below has the Unsharp mask treatment done to it, adjust it just enough to make the edges more sharper)

More on the cage tool here(New in 2.8?):

RE: Text along path, but with straight letters.
You are missing the point. Look at the OP's posted image of the cap.

The 'stems & spines' of the characters are vertical but the 'arms and serifs' follow a top and bottom curve. Also because of some perspective the spacing of the letters is not consistent.

Another way (for once, not necessarily better than Gimp) of doing this is using Inkscape and the path effect "envelope deformation".

Well, it all worked out! I'm actually pretty proud of how it turned out.

Thanks to all for your suggestions and thanks especially to Rich for the tutorial.
