Suggestions for Improvement?
Here's what I have so far for a logo, with a lot of help from OfNuts.

I plan to make the "a" easier to read. Other than that, any suggestions, please? Smile

RE: Suggestions for Improvement?
I'm afraid this one looks like a sports team logo, not a business logo.

If I were to rework the path, as already said, I would thin the O-C stroke, and may be also the V-0 one. And I would drag "avoc" closer to the H. For what kind of business do you intend to use the logo?

Yes mate, I didn't want to give too many details on what I'm doing to the path and confuse people Confused.
Smile

Have any ideas for colors, etc?

The business is building custom PCs (esp. gaming) and PC Repair.

I know, Havoc is a silly name - sadly, it's the best I could think of.

Given the shop name and its orientation, you want to attract the FPS players so we should add some violence to that. On a completely different track, you could emulate COD logos using army-looking fonts and the like.

If you want to keep this shape, which is also fine, I'd suggest a ripped metal look such as this:

I have adapted this pretty good tutorial (uses a previous version of Gimp, so things can be a bit different, espcially the Bevel-emboss filter), and instead of using a free-hand selection, made a selection from the "Havoc" path, and then used Select/Distort with parameters: 127/4/4/1/True/True

RE: Suggestions for Improvement?
I've been away a while, working on other things for my business, etc.

Mate, can you tell me how to get GIMP to show me the path that's already been drawn?
I hid the other layers, but I still don't see my path points.

Thanks.

RE: Suggestions for Improvement?
1) In the Path list (3rd tab), make the path visible (click on eye icon)
2) start the Path tool
3) click on (or sufficiently near) the path, this will put it in edit mode (if you click too far from it, the path tool creates a new path)

RE: Suggestions for Improvement?
When I edit the path and try to re-stroke it, it double-strokes the path. (It's not stroking both old and new, because it takes the shape of the new.)

This is obvious because you can see the "a" has double thickness on the right side.

It does this even when I delete the layer "stroke path"

What did I do wrong this time?

I think you have at least one point where the tangent handles have been dragged in the wrong direction, so what you get is really a very tight "S" so the path is stroked three times. Drag one handle or both perpendicular to the curve and the deformation of the curve should make it obvious.

RE: Suggestions for Improvement?
Works OK on my Gimp: I stroke your new path (with thinned "a") @2px and everything is fine. But what I wanted to see is a picture with your bad stroke (because the problem may lie in another layer).

RE: Suggestions for Improvement?
Sorry I gave you the wrong file. . I re-did it and moved some layers, and it strokes correctly now. Smile

I have a new question, though.

How do I MOVE a set of paths? (I want the avoc to be closer to the H) .. When I "Move the active path," it doesn't move... and I expect it would move the H too, if it did move.

I already learned how to bucket fill selection and I expect I can learn shadows, but I need to move it first. Smile

Thanks, Ofnuts!

RE: Suggestions for Improvement?
Funny you ask, this is something I did yesterday on your file Smile

The short answer is: that's what the "Move" toggle is the Path editor options is about. If you check it, then you can click on a path component and move it around. But.. that's one component or all components, not "some" components (like the inner loops of "a" and "o")...
Plus, you can only move things that way, and not rotate them (and, from my tests, you may have to rotate a bit).

So, I have a Xmas present for you. I wote a small Python script a while ago to delete strokes in a path. It's available there: http://gimp-path-tools.sourceforge.net/ (called "delete-strokes").
The idea is that you will split your path in two: one with "H--------------" and one with "avoc___":
1) make a selection that circles "avoc___" and leaves the "H--------------" out
2) duplicate "Havoc" path
3) Right-click on that duplicate, and "Tools/delete strokes", this removes "avoc___" and leaves your with "H--------------"
4) invert selection
5) duplicate "Havoc" again
6) "Tools/delete strokes" again; you get a path with "avoc___"

You can then move/rotate/shear/scale the "avoc___" path by using the regular transform tools in "Path" mode (rightmost icon in the "Transform:" line in Tools options. When done, you can merge it back with the "H--------" (Merge visible paths). If you haven't got python support post your file again with latest path and I'll do the split for you.
