Startup problem
I have been using Gimp for a couple of years with no problem, went to start it yesterday the startup appeared but nothing happened. XP task manager showed that the program was running rather than 'not responding'. I uninstalled and reinstalled - no difference. I haven't installed any new software and as far as I can see nothing updated in the last few days. Any ideas?

RE: Startup problem
Things to try:
- rename your .gimp-2.6 profile directory to force Gimp to start with a new one. If that fixes it, copy it back little by little - start Gimp in verbose mode (use "gimp-console --verbose"). Gimp will tell you what it's doing during initialization (mostly calling plugins). You may have a rogue plugin (for instance something that got copied by mistake in the installation plugin directory) that hangs or waits for user input and stops the Gimp init process. ![]() |

RE: Startup problem
Thanks for the prompt reply. You will have to excuse my ignorance, but I have searched the computer and can't find the gimp-2.6 profile directory and how do you start gimp in verbose mode?

RE: Startup problem
Start>Computer>Program Files>GIMP2.0>Bin>GIMP>gimp-console-2.6
Pretty sure then you type in Verbose, not sure though |

RE: Startup problem
Either you start it from a command prompt, or you create a shortcut for gimp-console and ad the
Code: --verboseThe Gimp profile directory, in WinXP, is in: Code: C:\Documents and Settings\{your_id}\.gimp-2.6![]() |

RE: Startup problem
Have just found that gimp will run from a command prompt, but that seems to be the only way to start it. The desktop shortcut and gimp-2.6.exe just show the start screen.

Otherwise uninstall & reinstall (installing over existing may not be enough). ![]() |

RE: Startup problem
Uninstalled, ran ccleaner in case there were any registry issues, re-installed got to the final install screen where it says do you want to run gimp now - just the same as before. Still starts from command prompt!

RE: Startup problem
My best advice, find someone around you who can check things on your computer directly.
Do you run as admin? Power user? Simple user? ![]() |

Continuing in this thread, re: "GIMP 2.6.11, not loading, and being stalled Ad infinitum! "

I mistakenly UPGRADED to GIMP 2.6.11 about a week ago, and now GIMP will not load. RE: Startup problem
Rename "C:\Users\Dear Old Daddy\.gimp-2.6\templaterc" to something else ("C:\Users\Dear Old Daddy\.gimp-2.6\templaterc.disabled" for instance) and restart Gimp.
If this isn't enough, rename the directory ""C:\Users\Dear Old Daddy\.gimp-2.6" to "C:\Users\Dear Old Daddy\.gimp-2.6.disabled" and restart Gimp. This will create a new profile. You can then copy back the useful stuff in the new profile (directories brushes, gradients, scripts, plugins...). ![]() |

When I have some time, I will attempt to "understand" what happened during the initial INSTALL & START-UP. Again, thanks a zillion for you help, it is GREATLY appreciated.
