Slowing Performance
Hi,

When I start up GIMP and begin using it the performance speed is great. But as I am working I've noticed that the speed of GIMP slowly drops off. For example, over a period of time it takes a few seconds for drop-down menus to open, and over all GIMP becomes sluggish.

Does anyone know why this is and if there is are any adjustments I can make to either my computer or GIMP?

Please let me know if you need additional hardware/software information.

Thanks in advance.

RE: Slowing Performance
It is possibly the result of memory fragmentation. Does exiting the app and restarting it make it speedy again?

@foxmuldr:
Thanks for your reply. Yes, when I restart GIMP the problem is alleviated, but it quickly returns. Do you have any suggestions for remedying "memory fragmentation?"

@ofnuts:
Thanks for your reply. I am running a total of 8GB DDR3 RAM. I am not sure how much RAM GIMP is requesting, as I am not using it at the moment, but I'll be sure to take note the next time I do. I have tried the setting the tile cache to 4GB and 6GB with the same results for each.

Additional Notes:
I am running GIMP on a Ubuntu 13.10, using a Lenovo Z580, with 8GB DDR3 RAM, Intel Core i5 2.6 GHz processor, Ivy Bridge Mobile Graphics, 750GB SATA HDD.

RE: Slowing Performance
Maybe this

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sourc...ug/1242420

Using PClinuxOS 32 bit KDE / 2 GB mem / Gimp 2.8.8 here and no problems, although large-ish images + much editing, obviously has an impact. Not enough to cause an issue.

It could be the 'buntu unity DE. Maybe switch to a lighter DE and see if that makes a difference.

RE: Slowing Performance
Thanks!
I actually stumbled upon that link, too. Yes, it does sound like a Unity issue and not so much a GIMP issue. Too bad, because I was actually, kind of, warming up to Ubuntu 13.10. Smile

RE: Slowing Performance
Thanks everyone! Your input was very valuable and educational.

I just updated to GIMP 2.8.8 (was using 2.8.6). I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope that fixes the issue.

RE: Slowing Performance
I see on the bug report its a possible memory link, but maybe you can try checking the below things too if you haven't already:

-How big of files in size do you work with? Resolution of images? (1024? 1280? 1600+ ?)

-Also in preference check the levels of undo states and reduce them to 2, 3 or 1.
Undo states can hog ram if you're working with large files to begin with over time.

If you don't really need the undo, you can duplicate the layer you want to revert to and put it on the bottom of the layer stack.

--To monitor how much ram without any image loaded, gimp is taking up. Open your task manager and look at the ram usage. Then open gimp, look at it again.
Last, open your image that your working with, then check the ram usage again.
