simple layer question... I hope
Hi there, just started using Gimp and following some online tutorials to do some logo making. Anywho, I've got a base layer with my text that has a transparent background.

My goal is to apply a 2nd layer (with a custom fill pattern that is basically a 2x4 consisting of the top 2x2 pixels being black and the bottom half being transparent). My goal is to have this layer be only applied to the text (not the transparent background) of the first layer... however when I add this 2nd layer it overlays the whole first layer (i.e. I want it to only overlay the text, not the transparent background)...

Can anyone help? Thanks!

Awesome, thanks!

#1, takes advantage of the fact that painting only applies to the selection
  • make text layer active
  • "Layer/Transparency/Alpha to selection" to create a selection matching the text
  • add new transparent layer
  • bucket-fill with pattern (which will only appear inside the selection)(make sure thet "fille whole selection" is ticked in the Tool options)

#2, let's erase the surplus
  • Top layer filled with your pattern
  • Select text layer
  • "Layer/Transparency/Alpha to selection" to create a selection matching the text
  • "Select/Invert" to select everything but the text
  • Select pattern layer
  • [Delete]
