Simple Animations
Hi: I have been learning GIMP (2.6.11) for the last few months. Today I wanted to learn the "Simple Animations" lesson found in the GIMP manual.
http://www.gimp.org/tutorials/Simple_Animations/

Step 1: "We'll create a very simple web banner. Let's start with a new image 468x60 px. Use white as the background color. Create new transparent layer. Select the whole image with Ctrl+A and fill it with black (Ctrl+,). Shrink the selection by 1 px (<Image> Selection -> shrink) and delete the selection with Ctrl+K. We created a 1 px frame around out banner".

Everything is okay until I get to the part: "delete the selection with Ctrl + K When I use this shortcut nothing happens. I assume I'm suppose to be left with a white border image. But, b/c the sample in the tutorial is quite small I am uncertain if it's also suppose to be transparent.

I have looked under everything e.g. Selection for delete ~ delete selection? Layer & so forth. I also went under Edit and chose Keyboard Shortcuts but could not locate Ctrl K nor do I know how to set short cuts myself (yet).

So, my question is ... how do I "delete the selection?
Thank you for your time!! Your help is Greatly appreciated!!
Sincerely, Kara Kara, Simple Animations

WOW, thank you!! : ) I'll try that. I thought I had & nothing happened but I'll give it a go again & let you know if it works.

Thank you!!

Well, I used the delete key and I think it worked. But shucks, now I am not certain what the author means by ... "I used a masked out flower" Does "masked out" mean he applied a layer mask? Just wondering. TY again.

IMHO this isn't a very good tutorial because it adds lots of frills that are not germane to the subject and are as many difficulties for the newcomer.

Thank you again. I agree that it's not the best tutorial for a newbie like myself. However, once I start on something I'm like a dog with an ole bone ... not likely to let go until I've accomplished what I set out to do. lol

By any chance ... do you know of any easier tutorials for this particular subject? Thanx again for your time Smile I really appreciate your getting back to me. ~ Kara

On the whole I don't like tutorials much, they seldom explain why things are done in a particular way (this is especially true of the video versions, that are much too linear to be any good) and start with far too ideal images for the job at hand, inducing much frustration when you have to repeat the thing on the picture from your phone.

There are fortunately some good ones, too.

Okay, thank you Smile

After I posted last I did do a Google search & have found some okay tutorials. Frankly, I find looking up the meaning of words used to describe tools and to then apply their meaning while using trial and error works quite well for me. However, I do like to use some monkey see monkey do videos, though you're quite correct in saying they tend to be too linear and images are almost always ideal. I'm sure with time and practice I'll get to where I want to be.

Be well & thanx again! Kara
