Setting Guide lines
I use guides all the time so a quick-ish look at setting guides in Gimp. Some of the common tools available. All available at http://registry.gimp.org.

For a more leisurely browse, this is worth a look. http://libregraphicsworld.org/blog/entry...es-in-gimp

Also my take on the tools and setting offsets to guides precisely. Video 6 minutes so not too arduous.

edit:
Notes on placing a guide at the end of the measure tool.
The tool tips hints and help say use shift ctrl alt these might vary depending on installation.

Using Windows 7 and Gimp 2.8.10 these key sequence work here
ctrl or shift-ctrl for a horizontal guide (note shift-ctrl also constrains the angle same as for any painting tool)
shift-alt for a vertical guide
ctrl-alt for both horizontal and vertical.

Using alt in linux (and maybe OSX) can be a problem as alt is used for moving a window around.

These sequences work on my PClinuxOS KDE, other linux distros might have a different key mapping.
shift-ctrl or left.win.key-ctrl for a horizontal guide
shift-alt or left.win.key-alt for a vertical guide
ctrl-alt for both horizontal and vertical.

Any other working key combinations, especially for OSX please leave your findings.

RE: Setting Guide lines
Must admit none of the short cuts listed for the guides work on my system. LM17. Other short cuts work just not the guides, and the win key is already set by the OS to bring up the main menu.
Still, thanks for the link to the plugins and tools, I didn't know any of that stuff was available. I've been doing all the guide stuff by eye up till now.

I can well believe that LM has the Win (sometimes used in linux as the META key) set to show a menu.

A bit surprised that the regular keys ctrl, alt ,ctrl-alt do not work to some extent. These work fine in a Bodhi Linux E17 installation, as with LM based on Ubuntu.

This is the Gimp docs page, I should have mentioned it in the original post.

For anyone having problems, you do need to be close to the end of the measure tool for the cursor to change, then click with the mouse.
