Selective gaussian blur
My predicament: Sharp eagle in a noisy clear blue sky. Is it possible to free select around the eagle and apply the selective gaussian blur to just the sky in one step? As it stands I am only able to blur just the sky if I select it in two less than precise sections.

RE: Selective gaussian blur
This is one case where the Foreground Selection tool works nicely. You can also use the Intelligent Scissors (you can move existing points or add new points afterwards, the path will adjust). You then invert the selection, of course.

You can also use the Magic Wand or Color Selection tool with a rather high threshold:
- click once on the sky
- shift-click in unselected areas or "ant-hills" to add them to the selection
- include the last spots by using Select/Grow some pixels followed by Select/Shrink the same amount.

RE: Selective gaussian blur
I was wondering about those tools and will explore them in the future. Thanks for the direction. What I did here was start at top center of sky and worked down to and around the bird and back up to beside the starting point, then back around entire pic and joined at starting point. This was also my first try with lens distortion filter.

No need for this. Just select around the bird, then invert the selection.

There are also ways to subtract things form the current selection or intersect it with another selection (saved in a channel).

Very nice pic, btw. Seems pretty close, even with a 200mm.
