How can I select an odd shaped image with no surrounding white space?

All sorts of ways, without seeing the image, maybe make as good a selection possible with the free select tool, followed by 'touching up' using the quick mask and a fuzzy brush.

This is all about the selection tools, based on Gimp 2.6 (never got round to updating it) but the essence is there.

You do not state the purpose of the exercise, usually it is to remove a background, so have a look at ofnuts discourse on the subject.
