Selecting Fly-Away Hair
I can upon this thread in dpreview:

So, as an exercise, I decided to give it a try. But my attempts were nowhere near good enough.

How is this done in gimp?

Lol, I couldn't resist! but of the many ways to edit out the background with hair. Here is an almost foolproof way (and very fast once you learn it)

Inverted selection threshold mask

.5 Add a new background layer (move it to the bottom of the list, this can be whatever you want to change the Background to, see "BACKGROUND" in final tutorial pic)
1. Duplicate the image/layer
2. Colors > Threshold...
Apply threshold filter to the image, take special care to keep as much detail of the outline of the hair on head as possible(see below picture)
-After moving the white trianble to the left until the outline of the hair starts to dissapear a little, bring the black triangle to the left to fill in the middle, this will be your mask
(SEE BELOW PICTURE)

3. Fill/paint in any white spaces with black except the details around where the edge of the hair is, it should be solid 2 colors, Posterize to 2 colors if needed.
Also clean up the corners of background on your threshold layer with white paint, the head should be the only one thats black.
4. Click, hold & drag on the black part with the fuzzy select tool (Fuzzyselect) to fine tune to outline.
5. Click the eye off the mask & on the layer dialogue window, click on the original image.
6. Invert selection (Select > Invert)
- Push delete to cut away the background, not done...
7. Select > Invert (to select back the head/hair)
8. Select > Shrink
-Shrink the selection to 2 or 3 under the hair line.
9. Filter > Blur > Guassian Blur...
-adjust a little to make the hair smoother(see pic below)
-click ok, unselect image, Done Smile

Thanks

I have been trying your mask method. Takes a little practice to get it right, but I am getting better.

Great! Yeah just be patient with it. My tutorial is inspired by the common tutorials online to change the background with hair. I managed to condense it to fewer steps...I think lol

One last tip:
For the blur part, I didn't add a pic of what the selection looks like after you shrink it.

But its about 1 cm(centimeter) from the tip of the hair, where there is a mix of hair & background is the space. How far in you shrink the selection depends on the length of the hair outwards towards the border of the image.
- Shrink the selection before you invert it(to select the background/hair mix)

And most important of all, have fun ^_^
