script fu problems
Hi there,
I am reasonable new to gimp and am having terrible trouble with script fus! I have downloaded a new set of them and have followed all the instructions as to where to put them (multiple times) but gimp cannot seem to find them. I have noticed that lots of other people seem to have had the same problem and I have tried all the things people have suggested with no luck. It is as if my gimp won't recognise the FU at the beginning of the file name. I have checked the scripts that it recognises and they all have the scm extension at the end but no FU at the beginning. Does anyone have any ideas? This is driving me crazy!!!!!!
The version of gimp I have is the latest 2.8.6

RE: script fu problems
Well, there's nothing special about installing Script-Fu scripts, you just have to put them in the right folder (see Edit - Preferences, then Folders - Scripts for path to the folder), then GIMP should be able to load them.

Of course if you have a broken script, it can mess up the loading of subsequent scripts. Try to start small, copy one script to see if it works, then add a few more and so on. I wouldn't really trust these large packs of scripts, and you probably don't need all of them.

RE: script fu problems
Thanks for the fast reply. I am using Windows XP and got the scripts from http://www.webupd8.org/2012/.../download...more.html.
When I download them I follow as suggested on the site ie

C:\Program Files\GIMP -2.0\share\gimp\2.0\scripts

When I follow that path, the scripts are there but when I open Gimp it does not seem to be able to find them.
I also have another folder called Program Files (x86) and I have stuck them in there also in case that would help, but it hasn't.

Which operating system? (Windows 7, MAC OS, Ubuntu etc)
Where did you get these scripts from? (a link to the place where you downloaded them from is good)
How exactly are you installing them? (give all details, however unimportant you think they are)

RE: script fu problems
The reference is to
http://www.webupd8.org/2012/05/download-...-more.html
which takes you to the well known
http://www.gimphelp.org/script28.shtml

Are you sure it is WinXP?, unlikely with a Program Files (x86) folder

follow the advice there and put the scripts in
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\.gimp-2.8\scripts (XP) or
C:\Users\YOUR-NAME\.gimp-2.8\scripts (Vista/Win7)
unless absolutely necessary not a great idea to use the global scripts folder.

This is the file and it is zipped. You did unzip them?
http://www.gimphelp.org/DL/gimp_scripts-2.8.zip

IMHO too many for one go, unzip to a folder then pick the ones that look interesting and copy over to the
C:\Users\YOUR-NAME\.gimp-2.8\scripts folder.

Where are they? These are well behaved I think most are in a new menu item script-fu
Remember that these will be greyed-out and not available until there is an image open.
For the odd one that is not in that menu - use the plugin browser which is in the help menu. Type a word (a guess) in the search box and it gives a list of matches.

RE: script fu problems
The pc I am using has a divided sort of hard drive where I can choose to either use XP or Win7 and maybe that is why there are two folders called Program Files. I have been using XP as I am more familiar with it. I also understand about zipped files and have extracted them to the scripts folder and can see the individual scripts with the scm extension there. I also know that I need to have an image open to be able to access the scripts. I open an image and, for example, if I wanted to use the "stampify" script, I then look for it under Filters-decor (and it is not there). I have also tried Filters- Script FU and I get three options (Console, Refresh scripts and Start server....I have tried all three opitons and that does not seem to work either...have to admit I didn't really know what I was doing with them apart from refresh!!!)

I have attached a copy of the script as it is in my folder (at least I THINK I have!!)
.scm  FU_shapes_stampify.scm (Size: 3.48 KB / Downloads: 172)

The infuriating thing is that I asked my son about the problem and he, having no experience with Gimp ever, downloaded the scripts and they appeared straight away!! Unfortunately he lives interstate and was not able to help me with this. Could it be anything to do with the "divided" C drive (Win7 and XP)?

I really appreciate all the efort you are giving me here. It is so hard explaining what the problem is and I can appreciate the fact that you must feel thesame.Undecided

As your link appears to have been mangled, Is your link supposed to be pointing to http://www.webupd8.org/2012/05/download-...-more.html ?

If it is then you have to download a zip file and extract the files inside to put into your GIMP scripts folder. You cannot just put the .zip file in the scripts folder and you cannot put the "gimp_scripts-2.8" folder into your scripts folder, it must be the individual files. (This is actually possible but you must edit GIMP's options to tell it to look in the new folder as it won't look in sub-folders automatically)

You are also advised to put them into your personal scripts folder: C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\.gimp-2.8\scripts rather than the "program files" folder otherwise you could loose them all when you next update GIMP.

Now I have to ask how you know that GIMP hasn't found them?
I picked one at random and it should appear in the GIMP menus at Script-Fu>>Shapes>>Old Paper

Kevin

edit: Rich got his answer in while I was typing mine Wink

RE: script fu problems
As an extra note, when I examine the plug in browser in the help menu, none of the scripts I am after come up. I do not have a separate script tab at the top of my gimp window and need to access them using "tools" tab.

RE: script fu problems
Hi back Kevin

IT WORKS!!!!!!!! I did what you said and looked at the preferences and it said that they were being stored in D drive. I had been saving them all to C drive. Now they are all there and I now even have a script fu tab at the top of my screen. That makes me feel oh so special. I don't know why I didn't think of doing that earlier.
You are WONDERFUL. Thank you so much for all the help you have given me. You are a treasure.

Linda
