Save to my files
Hey all, I'm new here and to Gimp. I turned a photo into a digital sketch with pretty good success, but when I went to save it to my personal files it took the place of the photo in the file even though I thought that I changed the name of the sketch so as not to take the place of the photo. Needless to say the photo is gone forever. What did I do wrong? I really couldn't make heads or tails out of the save section from the tutorials.

RE: Save to my files
It's a good idea to make a copy of a photo and then work on that. Create a directory like C:\work or something, and then copy your photo there before opening it. This way, no matter what you accidentally do to it, or if the power goes out, you still have the original.

Another tip is to save in Gimp's native xcf format every so often while working on an image. So if the power does go out, you don't have to start over again from scratch. Also, when you finally have the image just the way you want it, save a final copy as xcf before flattening or merging layers and saving as a jpeg or png or whatever. Then, in a couple of days when you look at the image and decide you want to change something, the xcf file still has all your layers and other work just the way you left it.
