RGGJAN fork at Partha.com
I'm considering trying this out for the foreground selection tool, but I'm not exactly sure what a "fork" is. I presume it's a different version of a stable open-source program but that's about all I know and I'm not even sure I know that, if you know what I mean. Has anyone tried this tool? Is it worth the effort?

Is a fork a completely separate program so, if I downloaded it, I'd have two versions of Gimp? Or does it replace the version I have--2.8.10? If it's a separate version, do I have to look out for conflict problems or stuff like that? What about brushes and stuff? Does anyone know why it's "portable"? What exactly does that mean? Can I put it on my Nexus 7? Why is all this stuff so complicated?

Does anyone else ever get The Road Not Taken and Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening confused? Is the same sort of thing going to happen if I download this fork?

Am I the only person left on this wretched planet that recalls the "fork" scene from Becket?

RE: RGGJAN fork at Partha.com
Is the download then just the new version of the tool, not an entire new version of Gimp? If I download it, would it automatically integrate with my current version of Gimp the way a plug-in does? I'm sorry, I don't know what the correct vocabulary for that is, but I think you get what I mean. Thanks.

I have just had a look at this one in a Windows Win7 64 bit VM.

That file from Partha place is just a self extracting archive, If you say install to C:\ then it makes a new directory C:\Gimp-2.7.4 and a shortcut on the desktop. The blurb says it is a portable gimp, so it is not going to affect your current installation. Unfortunately it does not work here. Why I do not know.

A better bet, also a portable Gimp so does not conflict with what you have is this one
http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-pac...kel_Hatti/

You need one of the Gimp_2.8.11_Onkel_Hatti zip files. Unzip to C: to give a folder C:\Gimp-2.8.11_x64(or x32). No shortcut with this, you make your own. It is working, there is the new 'matting tool' next to the foreground select.
Does it work. I do not know, a quick test and it has me baffled. Time for a bit of research.

Okay, very good. I can sort that out, unzipping and creating the folder anyway.

What is: gimp-run_Onkel_Hatti.zip file listed below the Gimp-2.8.11_Onkel_Hatti_64? Do I need that to run the Onkel_Hatti Gimp or is it maybe just a desktop shortcut?

Also, what are "Gimp Packagers"?

Thanks.

Not required, looks like already incorporated. After unzipping, start using the gimp-run-2.8.exe file
If you want to make a desktop shortcut, looks like this on my VM

All sorts of applications have people responsible for producing and maintaining the installation package, not necessarily the same as those who create the code. It is more common with linux distributions.

Thank you both. You've been a BIG help. I'm extremely hesitant about downloading anything anymore because "once bitten, twice shy", so I ask a lot of what probably seem like dumb questions first. Your patience is appreciated.
