Resolution
Hi!

I have created a banner in GIMP and am trying to get it printed through Vistaprint. (http://www.vistaprint.com). When I upload my banner on their site to get printed it keeps telling me my resolution is too low and my banner will turn out grainy. I thought I changed the resolution on my image but maybe I'm doing it wrong. Idk but it still keeps coming up with the resolution not being enough.

Thanks and any help is appreciated!!

We need a bit more information.

1) What size (in inches or cm) do you want your print to be?

2) What size is your banner in pixels?

RE: Resolution
Hi!

Thank you for responding.

The Vistaprint site says tihs "What is resolution?
Resolution determines the maximum size at which an image can be printed while retaining quality. The higher the resolution, the better the print quality. We recommend a resolution of 300 PPI (pixels per inch) at the dimensions your image will be printed. If your image resolution is lower than 300 PPI, your image may look jagged or grainy when printed."

My printed banner size will be 8 feet by 2.5 feet so I guess 96 inches by 30 inches.

When I click on properties of my banner says

Dimensions 3492 X 983
Width 3492 pixels
Height 983 pixels
Bit Depth 32

3492 pixels / 96 inches = 36 pixels per inch (PPI). This is not good enough to print.

300 PPI will give you a very high quality print. But for something 8 feet wide you can probably get away with a much lower PPI, depending on the viewing distance. If viewing distance is quite far from the banner, you may be able to go as low as 100 PPI.

RE: Resolution
There is one rule of thumb which says, for a photograph minimum pixels per inch (ppi) should be 300

That would make your 96 inch wide print require an image (96" x 300) = 28,800 pixels wide

however for posters etc there is another rule of thumb which equates ppi to the distance viewed, on the basis that the further away the less that detail matters.

ppi = 1/((distance-in-inches x 0.000291) / 2)

so, say your banner will be viewed at 20 feet, (240") then ppi could be as low as 28.6 say 30 ppi

In which case your image could be 2880 pixels wide.

* Please be sure to keep all text within the safe margin.
