Replacing patterned skirt with plain skirt
I have a black skirt that is densely covered in white polka dots in a photo. I would like to make it look as though it is just a plain black skirt. I've done a variety of things in the past to replace stuff while keeping the lighting looking realistic (mostly with the clone stamp), but the polka dots everywhere are making it really difficult.

Anyone have a good idea for the easiest way to make it look like it's just a black skirt?

RE: Replacing patterned skirt with plain skirt
I would try something along these lines:

- duplicate the layer
- make the bottom copy invisible
- back to top layer
- add a layer mask and initialize it with a greyscale copy of your image
- check edit+show the layer mask
- use the color threshold tool to turn this to pure black and white
- invert the colors (so the dots turn black, ie, will correspond to transparent)
- paint everything but the skirt in white (so that it remains opaque)
- unckeck the show/edit layer mask
- select your backup layer, and make it visible
- start the "move" tool with "move the active layer"
- slowly shift the backup layer under the active one about the width of a dot

In the bad cases or to get all sides covered: make other copies of the layer plus mask, with diminishing holes from top to bottom (use the dilate tool on the selection mask) and shift them each a dot width in the NESW directions and finish with the backup layer at the bottom. You can also blur the masks a bit.
