rendering and feathering the selection

rendering and feathering the selection
so coming from ofnuts thread about antialiasing and removing backgrounds i was wondering:

it seems, when you have an object the antialiasing is 1 pixel "thick" (not sure if that is the correct wording)

which tells me it is a good idea to feather a selection by 1px, whenever i want to render something nicely

but there is one thing i was never sure about: when you draw a path around an object
where exactly do you put the node ?

here is a segment of a screenshot of a 100px circle black on white bg

   

so i have black pixels, dark grey and light grey pixels
do i draw the path so it only touches the top of the black pixels ??

because if i feather the selection by 1px, it seems the correct way of drawing the path is so that it touches the light grey pixels

right, i was asking this, because i saw a PS tutorial on youtube and the guy was rendering a pretty big image of a person, and he drew the path in the middle of the "fuzzy" outline and then feathered it by 1px

also the question, of where to exactly draw the path remains unanswered

is it the blue, green or red path ?
