Removing People with Layer Masks
Using Photoshop or Elements, it is possible to open up two image of the same subject (Ie a building) taken taken at several minutes interval, then using the move tool you combine the two images, then add a layer mask, you can edit out any people or distractions,
Question how is this possible in Gimp, I have both Photoshop and Elements (Both Legit),
but I dont want to return to Windows.

All help, suggestions or ideas greatly appreciated.

RE: Removing People with Layer Masks
  • Open first image (shows up as "background" in the layers list)(preferably the one with the more people)
  • "File/Open as layers" and open the second image (will appear as it own file name in Layers list)
  • ALign the images properly:
    • If the image are completely identical (taken with camera on tripod) the adjustment is simple to do: put the top image in "difference" mode in the layers list, this should give and image very dark except on the edge of things (and of course where people are): move the top layer until the edges disappear or at least are minimized). When done put the layer back to normal mode.
    • if there is more difference in the images (usually, a different tilt if the shots were taken handheld): use the exact-aligner plugin to align them exactly, preferably using points where the people are (for instance, the border of the sidewalk)
  • On top layer, add a layer mask: "Layer/Transparency/Add layer mask" and n initialize to white (full opacity)
  • Use a black brush to paint over people in the top layer, this will actually paint the mask in black and make the layer transparent, sowing the underlying layer (where hopefully nobody shows up).
  • You can airbrush the borders to fade from one layer to another
  • Repeat for each person
  • When done, right click the top layer in the Layers list and "Apply laye rmask".
