Removing Fuzziness/Antialiasing Around Pasted Object
Hello GIMP Forums,

I'm trying to cut out portions of an image to manipulate them later in another piece of software. However, I found that when I placed the pieces I cut out back into the image, they would have a blurry edge to them.

It is easier to describe with an image:

Before Cut:

After Cut:

I know this could be done in MS Paint, but given how much more sophisticated GIMP is, i felt like there had to be a better way. Any thoughts?

Try turning antialiasing off when making a selection

If you don't want that jagged edge.

Before you make the cut, with the selection still active

In the above image, go to the "Select" menu

- Select > Feather
(Adjust as needed, may need to undo to get the right final result)
- Then cut (maybe with antialiasing on)

Also, there is a tutorial on proper subject extraction floating around on this forum that a certain Gimp Guru would be more than happy to link you to, so stay tuned Smile

Quick Update:
I saw no discernable difference between having the antialiasing off or on *IF* you feather after as it blends the jagged edge to a smoother more solid-looking line.

If you set the feather too high on the first try, you can control the strength by
Edit > Fade...
so try it

My result with a feathered selection of 10.00

I turned down the contrast of the pasted object so you can see the bottom edge too.
