Removing/cutting part of an image

Setup: Background = carbonfiber.jpg

Foreground: Path Object = (a not to complex logo formed to be letters)

Desired Results: The carbon fiber background is the focal point. The effect is to have the logo appear as though cut from the background where the cut-out would be transparent. The second step is to have a bright light appear as beaming through the logo cut. I'll deal with light effect later.

Right now I cannot figure out for the life of me how I can use the logo to cut out the path from the .jpg I have. I've attached the two images i'm referring to all of which were created in Adobe Illustrator CC

Any suggestion would be great!!

Christopher

RE: Removing/cutting part of an image
After doing the above, for the light-rays through letter effect.

1. letters still selected (marching ants)
- Add a new layer
Layer > New layer... "Foreground color (default black)
-Put it under the carbon fiber layer which should show through the cutout (see below pic)
2. duplicate your logo layer, put it on top & you can name it "Light..."
Layers > Duplicate layer..
3. Colors > Invert.. (to turn copy white)
4. *IMPORTANT STEP (for the light blur/ray to work correctly)
Layer > " Layer to image size..."
5. Filters > Blurs > Motion blur...
-Drag the edges of the motion blur window to make the preview bigger, then scroll the preview space until one edge of the logo can be seen (most of that corner. )
() Liniear
My settings: Length: "80" Angle: "212"
or
()Zoom (best result imo)
[]For zoom, you may want to turn off preview before you adjust or it will update the preview each time
*Start at "0" length & slowly increase it by some, let go of mouse to see preview
My setting: Length: "76"

For a bit of glow:

(nice glow!)
Nice!
Before blurs, you can add color with "Colors > Colorize"
-bring down the "lightness" slider some down first
