Removing background from a translucent (see-through) image

Removing background from a translucent (see-through) image
Can someone tell me how to remove a background from a translucid/see-through image (where the background can be partly seen behind the image). I included an example in an attachment.

I am able to render anything around the image itself to transparency (using the alpha channel, selection tools, etc.). But in translucent images such as in my example, that leaves what is "behind" the image (that brown stuff in this case).

I have been unable to find an appropriate tutorial to help me with this. If anyone here can help me out, even if it's just a little nudge in the right direction, it would really help because I have no idea what to do. All I know is that it somehow involves channels and layer masks.

Thanks!

RE: Removing background from a translucent (see-through) image
I assume you want to remove the brown background that shows through the bottom of the crystal... Well, the first question to answer is what do you want to replace it with...

One solution: sample some light blue, add layer above, set that layer to overlay, and paint the bottom of the crystal, that will just turn the background slightly blue.

If you want another background to show through, add you new background in a layer below, add a layer mask to the crystal layer and paint the mask with a very light gray where you want the new background to show through the bottom of the crystal.

To answer your question, I don't want to replace the background with anything. I just want it gone. Well, I guess you could say I want to replace it with transparency.

I guess if I used your first solution I could get the color and opacity right by fiddling around with it...

You want the whole image to be transparent there?

Use 2nd solution, without a background layer then.
