Refocus photos
Hi I was just wondering if there is an up to date plug in for refocusing photos. I tried the old refocus plug in but it doesn't seem to load. I am using Windows 7. Thanks for any help.

RE: Refocus photos
There is a comment on sourceforge that windows refocus-it no longer works because of dll name changes. This can sometimes be fixed. I would think the Partha version is a good bet.

Refocus (no longer works here, PClinuxOS) and refocus-it (iterative refocus) come from a time when images were much smaller and really struggle with large images.

This image is from the gran'dad of debluring "unshake", only 450x450 pix, http://i.imgur.com/VguBRho.jpg

Takes a bit of processing in refocus-it. Beware of the default 100 iterations.

looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/0eCVnaL.jpg and that is typical, horrible close up, not too bad from a distance.

Another option is non-gimp, SmartDeblur This is in the PCLOS repo but unusually the windoze version is better.
looks like this. http://i.imgur.com/Xlz9zHs.jpg Processing time much the same as refocus-it

The most recent version costs ($49 - too much I think), but the last free version 1.27 is available here
https://github.com/Y-Vladimir/SmartDeblur might be worth a try.

RE: Refocus photos
I appreciate every ones help. Thank you. I am a novice so it all sounds a bit too hard. I thought there might be an easy button to press to fix the problem, but I think it's probably easier for me to practice my photography skills instead. Thanks again.

There is, first "Filters > Unsharp mask" if you don't like the result (turn up ammounnt first then radius a little)

try below

I've been recently testing out the erosion sharpening script (just a simple file you drop into your scripts folder *not the /share/ one.)

In Gimp, to find the folder path

Edit > Preferences > Folders > Scripts

Erosion Sharpen Script
http://registry.gimp.org/node/25618

*As long as your image isn't crazy blurry, this filter works well.

A built in filter "sharpen" works well for text / font that isn't blurred beyond repair like in the refocus examples

Filters > Enhance > Sharpen...

========
A bit more complex filter is the "sharpen by synthesis" a sub-filter of the resynthesizer plugin. It works well for scaling up icons (up to 3oow x 250h) & sharpening them. (see below)

1. After you copy the section you want to sharpen, paste it onto a new document
2. Layer > Layer to image size
3. Enhance > sharpen by synthesize

(Click the image to see full detail)

its a slow plugin for images larger than 300x250, the above icon after scaling up is 193 x 255, but I did a second test at 300x250.
