Reduce photo to two colour symbol
I am a little bit unsure wether this is the right place to ask, but I want to design a t-shirt and my aim is to reduce a photograph to a two-colour image, more like a symbol, with bold lines and few details. A little bit like this one, taking this one into GIMP. I have been using the software quite a while for private photos, but I have never attempted something like this...

So far I have managed to remove all content except for "the edges" of the car, but I am a bit lost how I can make those edges smooth, because now I can see that the masks I used were not "straight". Well, what I am asking is: Does anyone here have a smart idea on how to progress making a symbol out of a photo? I'd like to hear that. Smile

RE: Reduce photo to two colour symbol
Me, I would create "Path" over the main features of the car, stroke some of them, and use other as selection for fills. But since I'ml not an artist, I wonder how long it would take me to produce an acceptable result.

You can also look into edge-detection algorithms. There are few standard filters for that (Filters/Edge detect) and an extensive and versatile collection in the "G'MIC" Gimp plugin:

RE: Reduce photo to two colour symbol
Thanks a lot, this looks like a very workable start! I tried the standard edge finders, but didn't really come to a result I was satisfied with. Have been rather busy some time, too, so this is just some spare time fun. Kind of lost myself in one approach here...

I am unsure what you mean by "path" - creating a script redoing the same things over and over again until I get some very distinct features to smooth out?

No, I mean the Path tool: Path Basically you would use it to redraw a line art just by following the picture. The art below took me all of 5 minutes. I'll let you guess how far you could go with a bit more time, dedication and/or artistic talent, since I invested none of the three here (especially the third Smile Didn't even try to make round wheels Smile

I also attached the XCF to show you how it's done.

Wow, thanks for the tip! That looks quite like something, I have never even seen the tool. I tried another way with threshold-colour reduction and "eroding" of edges, but it is probably not as efficient. I'll get back here if I'll ever get finished with this. Smile
