Rectangle select tool problems
I created a rectangle 175x25 to be used as a button area in a PNG image file, to show users where to click. Inside that rectangle I created a text box with "Click here to learn more." I had trouble with the text manipulations, but that's another problem.

I did a "select none" which I think deactivated the rectangle, and the moving ants stopped. Now I want to continue editing and have two problems:

1 I cannot reactivate the rectangle, getting the marching ants, to continue editing. If I back up the undo history, I can get to the rectangle with the text box inside it, but cannot activate it getting the marching ants back. The rectangle outline is just dashes.

2. When I deactivated the rectangle, the dashed lines just disappeared and my rectangle was gone. What I had expected was to get a single black line around the rectangle area, so users will see the rectangle as a button. How do I do this?

When I "selected none" did I accidently delete my rectangle or just make it invisible?

RE: Rectangle select tool problems
Huh I'm trying to understand, alot of similar text with no linked example/screenshots.

So do you want your final button to have a dashed rectangle around it?

-You can make a selection Rectselect with the rectangle select tool, then push "prnt scrn" (screenshot keyboard button)
-Paste it as a new layer & crop the layer down to the dashed border
(In the crop toolbox options, check []crop layer only)

Or / Also, did you want to re-edit your text?
Click Text the text tool, and with the layer that has your text on it highlighted, click the text on the canvas, it should reappear.

Sorry about the confusion, it was late.

No, I only need a solid thin line around the perimeter of the rectangle, to outline the rectangle...

a) I tried Select/Border Selection at 1px and nothing changed

b) I tried Edit/Stroke Selection using Stroke, Solid, 1px, and got a rather thick line, tried to get rid of it and could not, then tried experimenting, accidently used 6px, and now I have a very thick ugly line, and cannot get rid of that. I though Reset would undo everything but it does not, and the dialogue keeps reverting to 6px now.

By example, if you look at the Stroke Selection dialogue, there are 4 boxes at the bottom - Help, Reset, Stroke and Cancel - with outlines around them. That's the type of single line outline I need.

Or / Also, did you want to re-edit your text?
Click Text the text tool, and with the layer that has your text on it highlighted, click the text on the canvas, it should reappear.

Not sure where you meant by ":text:" but I clicked the Text Tool button on the left, then clicked inside the text area, and it opened ok.

My main issue is: how do I get the text (in the text box) to center itself inside the rectangle?

My other problem is with the rectangle with marching ants now, I cannot change the corner radius. Any change I make is ignored.

I'm uploading the file, a test file, maybe this will help.

You can however use "Select/Rounded rectangle" to convert an existing rectangle selection(*) to one with rounded corners.

(*) Actually it creates a rounded rectangle from the "bounding box" of the existing selection.

So you can't undo a corner radius once you've set it?

Once you form a rectangle, you cannot experiment back and forth with different radius?

What's the bounding box?

If you mean rounding the selection corners, you can adjust round corners of a selection rectangle in the toolbox options, look for a
[]round corners
check that then you can adjust the radius (how the edges curve/round for a rectangle selection) Rectselect

2. The text bounding box is the area where you type the text, its not a selection.
More on it here:
http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tool-text.html

For specifically the bounding "box" , in your browser on that page, push ctrl/command + f (find) and type: concerns
push enter if using any browser besides Chrome.

For example, to experiment with different corner radiuses. GIMP allows me to set the corner radiuses initially, but I when I change the radius numbers, it has no effect on the corners. The marching ant just keep marching. Maybe we need an ant wrangler who can tell them what to do?

RE: Rectangle select tool problems
The Rectangle Select Tool is not working. It has a little anchor next to it and it moves the image instead of "selecting" an area. The text at the bottom says click to anchor the current selection when off the image and click drag to move the selected pixels.

How do I get it back to the normal selection mode? I want to select an area and clear the blemishes. The current mode doesn't actually select anything.

Hi Rick,
The 'anchor' icon is displayed when you have a 'floating selection' (usually as a result of 'pasting' a selection. You must Layer->Anchor Layer to be able to continue.
See if there is a 'floating selection' layer present in the layers dialog.
If so, anchor it and try the rectangle select tool again.
Failing that, post a screenshot of your issue along with the OS and Gimp version details to help us assist you.
