question about feather tool
When I copy a selection from one image to another, I can't select the feather tool to blend it in the new image (it's greyed out). I have to first anchor the layer, then use the paths tool to re-select the pasted portion again, then feather. Is there another way?

Update: Looks like I can feather before copying/pasting the selection. Is this the only way?

RE: question about feather tool
try pasting your selection as a new layer in the new image, they you can adjust it to suit yourself before merging it into the image.

"feather" applies to the selection. Pixels that are in the feathered part are only "partially" selected. This partial selection translates as a partial transparency when they are copied over, but also as a partial coloration when painted over, So the blend you get that way is only a side-effect.

If what you want is a smooth blend of a layer into another (whether it comes from a paste or not) then you have to use "layer masks". A layer mask is more or less the alpha channel of the layer that you can edit directly. The value controls opacity, from black (full transparency) to white (full opacity). Drawing a black to white gradient in the layer mask creates a progressive transparency of the layer.

RE: question about feather tool
A few remarks and a helpful link

1) Select All to un-grey the Select/Feather option

2) Feathering appears to feather OUTWARD from the selected boundary. So if you simply feather your "all selected" image, you wont see anything change

3) You need to define a boundary inside the limits of the image to be the boundary from which you feather outward

4) But even if you do that and then feather, the image still looks the same. You have to remove the region outside the boundary from which you are feathering.

This link describes the procedure nicely without the verbiage I stuck in above, which I think is helpful re: why the various steps in the procedure below

RE: question about feather tool
2) Nope... Feathering is both ways from the current boundary. In the image below, the left half was selected (hard selection at position X=100). Then the selection was feathered with a radius of 100px and bucket-filled with black. On the left the first completely white pixels are 84 pixels away from the initial "hard selection" and on the right the first completely black pixels are 83 pixels away.

So if you want the feathering to stop on your current selection, you have to first shrink the selection by more or less the same amount (and conversely to grow the selection if you want the feathering to start where the current selection is).
