Q about rectangular crop, how to keep it?
really beginner Q, I've read the instruction but I'm missing something important
I can draw the crop, but how do I keep the crop?
All the other graphic programs I have used, the crop stays as set up when I move to another function
in gimp the crop disappears and I cannot find out in reading what to do keep the cropped area
what basic action did I not understand?

will it apply to every function I use?

RE: Q about rectangular crop, how to keep it?
Let's not confise the crop and a rectangular selection. They are two very different things.
  • The "Crop" is just meant to keep a rectangular part of the image, and drop everything else. It applies to everything: all image layers, selections... Once you have drawn it you "execute" it by clicking near its center.
  • The "Rectangular selection" produces a selection, which is a bunch of pixels on which editing will apply. A selection stays around unless you select something else; this may happen by mistake if you click again in the image with any of the selection tools still active. You can of course obtain the selection by several means, the rectangular selection being just one of them. You can augment a selection (usually by pressing the shift key when using a selection tool). The "marching ants" may not be visible if you made the selection not visible (View/Show selection or Ctrl-T), and this may also make the selection disappear as soon as you switch tools.

RE: Q about rectangular crop, how to keep it?
Thank you!
I was confusing them, see rectangle, assume it is rectangular crop ;-)
duh...
Thank you for a nice concise answer too

I've shied away from gimp because of the learning curve, would love to but not a lot of time
let down by software(s) I have been using for ages, need to replace them with something that will upgrade to new windows versions and be usable with word and publisher.... oops, haven't test that yet....
