Problem using Paths tool
I have just started using GIMP with my middle school students. They are using the Paths tool to 'cut out' a photo of themselves to use in a layered image. They outline their photo with the Paths tool and then go to Select>From Path to get the marching ants outline. Every now and then, a student's marching ants outline will take a sharp turn into the inside of the image and then back again to the outline, like a V cut into the outline. However, there is no anchor point at the point of the V. I know a screen capture of what I am talking about would be better than this description, but I'm hoping someone else has experienced this and knows how it happens and what can be done to fix it.

RE: Problem using Paths tool
I hope I understand what you're saying if not please correct me, but are you talking about inverting your selection??? Say select yourself, and invert it so everything else is selected but you.

If that's what you're trying to do, well first make the selection lol, and then press CTRL+I or go to Select/Invert and your selection should be inverted.

If you zoom in the image, the pixels get bigger but the path tools indicators don't change, so you can make a path around pixel-size objects. This said, for such work I would use the quickmask and paint a selection.

RE: Problem using Paths tool
I'm the original poster, just getting back to the forum now. We can invert a selection without a problem. The issue is getting the outline correct. It's been working well most of the time, but once in a while a student with do their outline and then 'select from path' to get the marching ants, and when the marching ants appear, their outline with suddenly take a sharp turn to the inside of the object being outlined and then back out to the original path. I know a screen capture would be ideal, but I get busy trying to help all my students and forget to ask the student having the problem to hold on for a minute until I can get around to doing this.

RE: Problem using Paths tool
Come to think of it, there is no need to have a point defined at the tip of a V in path. It can be produce by dragging the direction handles of two adjacent points in the same direction.
