Print size and dpi
Hi there,
I was looking to resize 6 images to a print size of 8.5 cm * 8.5 cm for a photo cube.
The original images were Apple camera pix, e.g.:
Size in pixels : 2448 * 3264
Print size : 863.60 * 1151.47 mm
Resolution 72 * 72 ppi
File size : 1.8 MB
JPEG image

I used Gimp to crop the images to a print sze of 8.5 * 8.5 cm and went to the local shop in my city where they printed the images.
Unfortunately, the result came out as a 11.5*11.5 cm images.

I asked the guy for some explanations and got some confused and irritated info about 300 dpi machine limitations, standard format pictures, my pictures being non compliant since they are in 72 dpi and other stuff I could not totally figured out completely since at the end of the day I received good pictures but in 11.5*11.5 cm square format.

Anyone could help me figure out what I could do to sort this out ? (Talking with that guy is not an option since he is really unpleasant)

Thank you,
xtof

RE: Print size and dpi
First of all 2448x3264 is not square, so you need to crop the images so the sides are equal. (edit: which you did but..)

Much as hate to, we better work in inches. 8.5 cm = 3.346"

If the print shop insists on printing at 300 dpi then you need an image 3.346x300 = 1004 pixels square. You can scale your cropped image down to this.

You should not need to but before exporting your image go to
Image -> set print size and change the x and y values to 300 then everything is set up for unhelpful print shop.

RE: Print size and dpi
Hey,
Thank you for the quick feedback,
I did as you advised

1. Crop a square of the scene I want to use
2. Edit Print size to 300 dpi
3. Scale image W & H numbers to 1004 px

I think that what got me confused in the first place is that I mixed the print size window and the scale image window. In one case, the dpi will change as soon as you edit the W & H.

Thanks again for the help,
Have a good day,
xtof
