Print Dialog Window
New to Gimp and new to the forum so Hi to all.

I'm currently running Gimp 2.80 on a Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit Machine. I installed the default windows install package on the Gimp website.

When I go to print the windows default print dialog appears and not the one in the help file, which I presume is the gimp default. Basically I have no control over the settings.

I presume I'm having some sort of compatibility issue.

Has anyone had any similar problems, and can you please suggest a solution. I am keen to explore the software further, but if I can't print, it will be a none starter.

Thanks in advance.

Kevin

RE: Print Dialog Window
The one in the help file is likely a Linux one (and the help file could be mostly about 2.6). It would help if you posted a screenshot of that print dialog.

In any case you can always print by saving to file and using another utility (Windows image viewer) to print.

RE: Print Dialog Window
Attached is a screenshot of the print dialog window that I get. As you can see it's pretty limited. It doesn't even accept any other paper size other than the printer default.

Help would be very much appreciated.

Regards,

K

RE: Print Dialog Window
This is done in "File/Page setup" (just above "File/Print")

RE: Print Dialog Window
As Ofnuts says, use File>>Page Setup to set the paper size, then on the Print dialog you've shown us, click on the Image Settings tab to control how your image is printed on that paper.

RE: Print Dialog Window
as well as all the above good advice

Thats a networked printer (at work?) that might complicate matters.

But generally something like this

RE: Print Dialog Window
Thank you all for your input.

There is not Page Setup option in the file menu, see attached screenshot.

I appreciate this is free and all that, and maybe I should not be expecting something quite as polished as Photoshop, but surely they should look at improving the way you print. This is truly archaic.

K

@ kevinfeilding

You are of course correct, there is no page setup as such in the file menu. Windows very much relies on your installed printer driver for many of the settings.

The work flow is 'print' -> 'print dialog' -> 'image settings' -> 'apply' then 'print' as the previous screenshots show.

Are you saying that this is not available in the 'Image Settings' tab from your screenshot?

Just for reference, If you were using linux (Gimp originated as a Unix application) then there is a 'gutenprint' plugin that has more settings.

There is one for windows, this is a screenshot on my WinXP + gimp 2.6.12 installation.

more settings than enough.

Again this is just for reference, the chances of you getting gutenprint working in Win7 64 bit + Gimp 2.8 + a networked Xerox printer are slim-to-nil. Easier to switch to linux.

I think Ofnuts mentioned it before, not always neccessary to print from Gimp, When complete, export your image as say a png and print it in another application, XnView or something like that.

I appear to have the same problem as the originator of this thread. When I click on File Print, I get the same dialog as the screen shot posted here. It is missing critical tabs that are necessary for the management of high end color printers. When I look at the screen shot in your online help, the dialog shown has all the necessary tabs. I am running Windows 8 and a friend of mine that also runs Windows 8 has the same problem. Is there a fix for this or a setting somewhere?
Thanks for any helpl

RE: Print Dialog Window
I too can not print to an HP 6200 PhotoSmart Printer that is on my Network using Gimp 2.6.11 on Win7 or WinXP.

Gimp defaults to a page size of letter every time I open the Page Setup dialog. On the windows XP machine that runs the printer I found I had to tell it that the printer had a photo paper tray. Then photo paper showed up on my Win7 laptop under the networked printer device properties. However the page size still defaults to letter in Gimp 2.6.11. The photo tray with borderless 4x6 inch paper does not show up as an option. Setting the page setup for the windows 7 printer to 4x6 then reopening page setup shows the paper size is letter. Note after enabling the photo tray on the networked Windows XP PC that has the printer attached, it is listed as a second paper option. The first option is letter.

From the Windows XP PC running Gimp 2.6.11, I was unable to print to the photo tray using Gimp. I had to print using the Windows Picture Viewer application. Again on this machine Gimp defaulted to letter size. Unfortunately when the HP Printer sees the paper size of letter it complains that the paper size is incorrect, even when we tell gimp to use borderless 4x6 on a 4x6 image.

After enabling the photo tray on the networked WinXP PC with the printer attached, I was able to print a 4x6 photo from Gimp 2.6.12 running on Ubuntu 12.04. There is no File, Page Setup, dialog. There is only an Image, Print Size option.

I have not tried to update Gimp on winxp and win7 yet...
