Postcard Text Effect
I am trying to make the warp effect of the texts from postcards. A perfect tutorial for this is here. However i it is for photoshop and i am having difficulty trying to mimic this using gimp. i come very close. very very close. but each step is slightly off. If someone has the time to create a gimp version of this or if they know of a tutorial already out there, then let me know.

Thanks

RE: Postcard Text Effect
For the 3D text part, here is a great tutorial I found on the forums while you wait
http://gimpforums.com/thread-3d-text?

And here is my tutorial I made a while back (you have to scroll down some) along with other really good ones on 3D text with depth.

*Please note, I'm going to update the way I bucket fill in the video I'm making as I found an easier way through "Edit > Fill with BG color" or "Edit > Fill with FG color"

So you can just get inspiration from my tutorial on this page if anything.

(I've done text frame around images before, not too difficult, I'll see if I can make a vid for it tomorrow, so stay tuned ^_^)

RE: Postcard Text Effect
awesome thanks.

The warp text script only seems to work if i have 4 anchors. any more than that and it doesnt work
i am going to school for Art New Media in the fall and so i am trying to brush up on things. i am hoping i don't have to get photoshop.
also found this (for anyone else looking): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pkd8LCHUdwI the text isn't warped or wavy or anything, but is still a good example for everything else

The bit that simulates the 3d bit is not warp text but a bit further down - pathblend

26 minutes video, tempted to a few of MR's exclamation marks.

There are other 3d generating scripts, to take the tedium out of the process. This one is very new
http://gimpscripts.com/2013/12/3d-extrusion/

They all tend to work on the same principle, repetitively duplicate and offset a layer to produce a 'stack'.
Then it is basic gimp manipulation, adding moving layers, path/selection/cutting/copying/pasting.
All the thing you will need as a design student, so get practising.

RE: Postcard Text Effect
hey Billybag, sorry for the late reply, I was perfecting (or trying to perfect) my tutorial vid.

Seems I was beat to the punch this time lol! But my tutorial is a quick & dirty way to get it done. The one you found is nice two but doesn't have the tilt.
Rich's findings & plugins are nice too.

the video is around 7 mintues, check it out when you get the chance, cheers!

RE: Postcard Text Effect
Check out Ofnuts plugins. Look for text to path, it should work for the warp effect.

Yeah lol for a second I too was puzzled, the whole page only has discriptions of each tool.

(Btw, got both your messages ^^ thanks)

But you can find the .py (python script) under the "Downloads" section on his homepage

RE: Postcard Text Effect
i am much happier about how the text turned out in comparison to my Rome one. BUT, i DEFF need to make it pop-out much less next time. i am also unhappy with the coloring i chose. i was trying to keep it vintage but maybe a gradient would be better. On that note, i may even stray from the 5x3.5 inches that a postcard normally is. i think it will just look better overall. i don’t know. i think the next one will be closer to perfect though. His hat clearly doesn't look right either but that is a whole other thing i need to work with.

Thanks for all your help though! Your tutorial was a huge help.

i want to take Gunter to some place a bit more tropical next time.

RE: Postcard Text Effect
AWesome! It looks great, I think I know what you're saying about the colors. For the red, go to
Colors > Brightness-Contrast
-and pull the contrast to the left for a more retro-washed out look.
(for future reference of course)

Gunther from AT lol!

RE: Postcard Text Effect
Thanks for all your help guys! Here is Gunter in Puerto Rico and i finally have the text how i want it, relatively. As you can tell i played around a bit more with the rest of the PS tutorial on vintage postcards that i posted previously. It came out okay but i definitely need to better understand the gimp ways of doing common photoshop things.

Thanks again guys!
