Poor Photoshop Tutorial Makes Good for Gimp
I find it amazing sometimes what passes for "good tutorials" and I am not picking on Photoshop. My husband, after reading my tutorials "Space I" and Space II", asked "Ok... where is the space ship?". He likes to tease me like that. Unknown to him I decided to browse for a tutorial on a spaceship and found this poorly written tutorial.
Goa'uld Death Glider no doubt something from Star Trek or Battlestar Galactica... But I am not picking on the image. That is good product, very detailed, and realist.

What I am picking on here are the words like...
Quote:In order to complete this tutorial, you must know how to use the pen tool at least on a basic level.
The main used tools are Burn, Dodge and the Pen Tool. Sounds pretty simple right?
So I am ok, I have some basic knowledge meh...
But then all their instructions lack any details. They tell us to dodge and burn a lot. And asks the reader;
Quote:You got the idea right?
Guess what are you going to use to create those lines?
Does it make sense?

I got into it as-far-as making the cockpit canopy, and said "Screw it!". This person needs to proof read more than I do....

As you can see, I made some personal modification to the design.

Well I think I made my point, and should you care to follow that tutorial, good luck! But in this thread below, I plan to make my own "space ship" from scratch. I like to be different so instead of something that looks like a tank from an Asylum film, I am going to make an organic or semi-organic ship. Not the Lexx or Moya but something bug-like or slug-like.

oh and don't worry, I can take criticism as much or more as I dish out.

Thank you for your support. You sound a lot like, King Solomon, "What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.".

I suppose to some extent, those words are true, but I don't think he had a PC let alone the GIMP.

That is my first step to study how nature works and build an idea from there. This project won't be a one or two day "quicky" so expect a lot more posting here. LoL While I study nature, this won't be a project that groups such images together and creates a collage of them either.

My portholes will be like the spider's eyes, all black and shiny. However the spider is not in the black of space and should only reflect light from stars and planets. Meanwhile the horned bug shell looks neat, insects are well armored, and his body is the base for my creative inspiration.

BTW Looks like I need to replace the battery for my pen on the tablet... not that you will need a tablet but they are a good tool for sketching out ideas.

I might have neglected it too long. It isn't acting very normal. But the tablet can wait... on with the show.

Gathering Sources
Ofnuts made a good list for me to follow;
  • Hull Textures - Since this will be semi-organic I will be creating both flesh and metal textures.
  • Lights - Unless the your spaceship is flying through the clouds, light sources are limited to the sun or nearby starlight. Unless your ship is covered in neon... maybe.
  • Jets and Photon Drives - May look good on some old school, but this girl is into fanstasy. Solar wings for mine.
  • Weapons - I am not sure yet, maybe mine is just a transport. I will think about that one.

I already made some black bug eyes just by using a white supernova without any spokes. All my materials at this point are just flat textures. Once I have enough done I will be back online and show you how I made each one and how to "assemble them" into our hull.

Until then, remember what Carl Sagan said, "You tell me you love me, but I’m not sure you know what love is, or how fast it flies, or how much it resembles a UFO, or what kind of weapon you’d use to shoot it down." And if he didn't say it, he should have.

RE: Tutorials
Did Joan 0f Arc have fire insurance?????????

Thanks for the advice. I'm just beginning to use the tutorials at Gimpology and I find them among the best I've used yet but I could be in for a surprise.

Keep on Gimping!

Yes she did Tom, but she forgot to read the fine print.

[Tutorial Moved]

Well I get tired the older I get. Hopefully back on in 24 for more steps.

This is just one part of the "whole tutorial". I don't mind what you do, but scattering the tutorial parts will make it difficult for people to follow don't you think?
