Please help with 'centering' a pattern
Hello! I know this is my first post on this forum but I really need some help and I searched the net like crazy and found nothing.
OK, so maybe I'm just stupid, I made a new test pattern to see if I can use it to decorate the edges of a bed cover(retexturing a bed for Oblivion). sooo when I make the selection where I want my pattern to appear...well it does some crazy things(or not crazy) the point is I want it to fill my selection and remain centered but it just goes up or down...I want to know if there is any way to center the pattern you use in your selection. I made the pattern's height to match the selection's height I'm using and it still goes crazy.... Sad I have inserted a picture to show what I want.
Thank you in advance and sorry about my question if it's stupid and about grammar/spelling mistakes, English is not my native language. [Image: stupidpattern.png]

A pattern is merely a "tile" that is repeated ad nauseam to fill the selection, so you cannot really control how many times it will be used (unless you have a very precise ratio between the pattern and the selection dimensions.

For what you want to do, I would use either:
- using a clipboard of the pattern followed by multiple paste (and possibly a shot of the align tool)
- define the pattern as a brush (use the brush from clipboard) with 100% spacing and then draw (using the shift+control keys to enforce a perfectly horizontal drawing).

RE: Please help with 'centering' a pattern
Thank you for the reply, ofnuts! I will try to use the clipboard method....I don't think(or know for that matter) that I can make it into a brush because I started from the brush and made it into the golden thingy with a tutorial, so it has bumpmap and whatnot...so I don't know if that is possible.
Uhh, I was afraid that it's not possible to do what I want to do. What I don't understand is why when I make a selection the exact size of the pattern it still won't fill centered...I just have to find another way to add these details to my blankets. Sorry for being such a noob.
Thank you again for answering!

To make it a brush, just do a rectangular selection and copy to the clipboard... It will appear as the first brush.

A little experimentation will show you that patterns are painted over the whole layer and then cropped to the selection (at least for a bucket-fill). So the actual position of your pattern in the selection depends on the position of the selection... If you want to center things, put your repeated pattern in a new layer, autocrop the layer and move it around or align it relative to the selection using the align tool.
