Please help!!
I apologize in advance because this is going to sound so stupid.... You know when you open up GIMP for an image, and there are grey dashes surrounding the image?     I don't have those grey dashes and I want them back!     How do I get them to return? Thank you!!

RE: Please help!!
It is a chequer-board pattern and it is Gimps way of depicting transparency.

You can add transparency to any layer using the layers menu. It is known as 'alpha' or 'alpha channel'

Once you have an alpha channel then erasing or reducing opacity for example, will show whatever is underneath. Nothing underneath - then the chequer board patten shows.

Only certain image formats support transparency so either save using gimp .xcf format or another is 'export' using png format. Export as a jpg and your transparency is turned to white.
