Picture resolution
I am trying to scale an image to fit my screen, but it doesn't seem to go to 1680x1050. How do I get it to fit?

RE: Picture resolution
What is the original size? Did you unchain the Width/Height parameters (click on the chain link)(note that doing so gives the image a difffent aspect ratio, so it may appear distorted.

Typically the best thing to do is

1) crop the image using the crop tool, and set it to a fixed aspect ratio (and enter 1680:1050 for the ratio).
2) once the image is cropped, scale it (you can keep width/height chained)

Hm, I don't really get what I'm supposed to be doing to it.

OK, so I didn't really get what you wanted to do... or what was your actual problem.

Trying to make the image fit my screen. I don't know what I'm really looking to do with the crop tool.

RE: Picture resolution
It seems your image has not got the same aspect ratio (width/height, in pixels) as your screen (1680/1050). So you have two choices:

1) rescale the image with different scale factors for height and width and lose the aspect ratio (in the Image/Scale dialog, this means "unchaining" Height and Width). Unless the change is small the image will look weird.

2) keep the aspect ratio, but this means extracting from your current image a part that has the correct aspect ratio (this is the purpose of the crop tool) and once that is done, scale it to 1680/1050, which won't change the aspect ratio.

For instance if your image comes from a camera, it likely has an aspect ratio of 4/3 (1.3333), say, 4000x3000, so it won't fit your screen with a 16/10 aspect ratio (1680/1050=1.6). So you have to extract an image which will have a height of 4000/1.6=2500 pixels and a width of 4000pixels from that image. Other combinations (such as 3200x2000 are of course possible).

Forcing the aspect ratio in the crop tool spares you the math...
