Photoshop multilayer image-CMYK to RGB problem
Hello, I had a sudden loss of Photoshop and need to work on a large multi-layered psd. (Had I known in advance I would have reduced the size & layer amount.) Gimp won't open it because it's CMYK.

Tried several conversion techniques to RGB, none worked well. How can I open this file and maintain the layers? Also, there seem to be several different kinds of RGB, what are the differences?
Thanks.

Do you have the original image files? If so I would just redo everything in GIMP from scratch.

If you don't have the original pictures anymore you can save your many RGB conversions as separate layers in gimp. Then combine them in one xcf(gimp file) (import)

There are two programs that might be able to open, view the layers
Paint.net & infraview

The differences AdobeRGB1998 .. ColorMatchRGB .. sRGB are in the gamut, the number of colours that can be displayed. Wikipedia is your friend.

"large multi-layered psd"
Personally I think you are on a loser, Bound to be attached to those layers, various 'adjustment layers' and 'filters' and 'who-knows-what' that will not be recognised. Find some kind person with a copy of PS.

On a more trivial level you can convert to a layered .xcf or a .tif format with ImageMagick.
http://www.imagemagick.org/

It is command line so put your image in a easy to find folder, best if you get a RGB icc profile in there as well, to save typing paths and a typical command line is along the lines of;
Code:
convert cmykpsd.psd -alpha off -profile sRGB.icc -alpha on converted.xcf

screenshot in my linux machine

the command identify will tell how many layers to expect.
Error messages for .xcf? just a whinge from IM, the image opened ok. Any problems and try a tif format.

This is it open in Gimp, left side is the psd error message, right side is the xcf with the layers.

To save searching for an icc here is one zipped and attached. Remember to unzip it.

Attached File(s)
.zip  sRGB.icc.zip (Size: 2.67 KB / Downloads: 47)

RE: Photoshop multilayer image-CMYK to RGB problem
Much appreciation to all of you!

In a rare combination of der! and luck, I finally realized that I still had Photoshop running on a different, older machine. Moving the project back and forth when I need to use psd is an extra step or two, but it works for this project.

I do look forward to creating originals in Gimp after this project, though, then I wouldn't have to deal with Adobe again.
Thanks!
