Sad Pen/Tablet Problem
I've recently purchased a Wacom tablet to use with Gimp and I seem to be experiencing a very annoying problem. Sometimes, almost seems random, when painting the brush will keep switching to the default, and currently selected colours when making a stroke. I can get this to stop happening by moving the cursor over the toolbox, however the strokes do not always go into the undo list when this happens. This makes it extremely hard in some cases to get rid of as you have to erase the strokes which isn't always possible.

Although it seems random at times, it mostly happens after an undo or another action has been made on the toolbox etc. There is one way to consistently get this to happen though. When painting a stroke, where part of the brush is outside of the image window, this will occur. This leads me to believe that it's somehow getting confused between the pointer and the pen.

This is really detracting from my enjoyment of painting as I'm constantly worrying about this happening. I'm am having to create new layers non-stop in-case it happens, and it makes dealing with edges of images troublesome. Someone please help me...

Thanks...

RE: Pen/Tablet Problem
Thank you for the reply.

I searched before making this thread, and couldn't find anything to help me. I also checked out the link, and could not find a solution.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

RE: Pen/Tablet Problem
No solution for you, just a couple of queries which might be informative.

Wacom tablets are usually very reliable, I have an old (2005) Volito but which model do you use and are the drivers up to date for your OS? & What is your OS?

When you set up the tablet, do you have it mapped to the monitor area or the Gimp window area.

You say problems occur when part of the brush goes outside the canvas.
Have you tried going out of single window mode into the old 3 window mode where the dialogs are away from the canvas?

On a similar thought, does the problem occur when the canvas size is zoomed to a smaller size leaving a margin to the edge of the window
or
Full window mode is used in 3 window mode (F11 toggles)

Gimp 2.8 is not too clever with tablets but normally they work
Gimp 2.6 had better support, it is possible to run both 2.8 and 2.6

RE: Pen/Tablet Problem
Yes, all of my drivers are updated both for my OS, and my tablet. I think the tablet I have is called the Wacom Intuous Small/Pen. There is one called the Pen and Touch, mine is basically that one without the touch feature.

My OS, is Windows 7.
Processor - Intel® Core™ i3-2370M CPU @ 2.40GHz 2.40GHz
Ram - 6GB
System type - 64 bit

When I set up the tablet, I set it to full screen for both the browser and Gimp.

I tried the 3 window mode and yes it does make it a lot easier to not go outside of the image window.

I have been using the the full window mode also recently to avoid the problem, which has helped a lot. This seems to be a good workaround for the problem I was having with the image window, as it only seems to occur when part of the brush overlaps outside of the workspace and not the actual layer/image.

As for the problem where it was occurring after an undo etc, after more testing it seems as if the problem happens after using a shortcut button on my tablet. It seems slightly random in occurrence but frequent. I can normally get it to happen within 5 tries of trying to reproduce. After using a shortcut on my tablet like undo, zoom etc, the brush outline will sometimes freeze. the next stoke is usually when it happens. When this happens, you will be forced to either change the tool, or move the pointer outside of the image window/workspace to reset things back to how they should be. However, as mentioned in my first post, it doesn't always go into the undo list and I have had some work completely ruined through this. The main reason i purchased my tablet was because of the shortcut buttons, so this is a little frustrating for me.

OK, that is good to know about 2.6. I will give it a try.

Thank you very much for the suggestions, much appreciated...

RE: Pen/Tablet Problem
Hi,
Did you tablet include and install the software called "Wacom Tablet Properties"?
If so, check the settings for the Pen's mapping area.

Well I am at a loss.
I have never experienced this with my Wacom Intuos4.
If like you say it appears to be swapping between mouse and pen pointers randomly when near the edges, can you set both the mouse and pen's bushes to have the same attributes as a work around solution?
Huh
